Migrate from MICRON to WINBOND SOP8 SPI flash

Hello guys, I need some advises.

I'm buying used Elitebook 840 G1 laptop with EC & Main BIOS chip in it. The EC is Winbond 25Q16BVSIG and the Main chip is Micron N25Q128A. My laptop randomly crashing with glitched screen and static sound, and then it won't turn on with 3x5 blinking capslock (which I know it's board failure).

Then I tried to reprogram these chips with different softwares. I'm using CH341A, default CH341A software for winbond and using asprogrammer for micron (since micron chip cannot be reprogrammed using default software). It's work and my laptop normal again.

The chips looks like ever been desoldered before. My first question is whether the laptop crashing because the bios chips are damaged?

If I want to replace the Main chip can I use Winbond 25Q128FVSG instead? (micron chip not available in my country).

I also attach a document found from internet, not sure if it helps. I don't really understand about technical thing so I need your help.

    thank you

Re: Migrate from MICRON to WINBOND SOP8 SPI flash

Random hardware crash is not caused by the BIOS. This is just a coincidence. More likely to be a RAM issue for example.

As for replacing the chip by another model, it may or may not work. Depends if the board and the BIOS were designed to support different models or not.
One thing is the ME region has a VSCC table of supported chips. If the chip you use is not in that table, it'll cause problems.
Better to use the same model as the original chip to avoid issues.

The 25Q128FV is supported. You can open your bios with UEFITool to see the VSCC table. The bios ID is EF4018 ,search on google for Winbond EF4018 or Winbond EF 40 18

I agree with piernov,a random hardware crash is not caused by the BIOS.

Thank you for reply, and just as I thought I never know about this VSCC table. I want to stick with the same chip model but I can't find anywhere in my country, so I have to find alternative.

I may take your advice, it may be not the bios chip, it may be the ram or something else, I'm using diferent RAM brand with the same spec, only the timing slight different. What makes me to think it is the motherboard was the blinking count.

Thank you SMDFlea, I feel very reassured now and yes I'll let my laptop run for a while. I hope the problem doesn't occur again because it's very troublesom to reprogram the chip again.

Thank you guys for your informations

Winbond 25Q16JWNIG – Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 G814JZ bricked after wrong flash – Need help
          by Vincent Kahle
          Hi everyone,

I hope someone can help me.
I have an Asus ROG Strix Scar 18 (G814JZ) laptop with a Winbond 25Q16JWNIG chip on the motherboard.

Unfortunately, I flashed the wrong file (BIOS/EC/other region – I'm honestly not sure anymore), and now the laptop is completely dead: no display, no fan spin, no reaction at all.

I have a CH341A programmer and I'm able to read and write to the chip. However, I'm not sure which software is best (AsProgrammer, NeoProgrammer, etc.) or if there's anything specific I should watch out for.

[Help] Lenovo Yoga Slim 7-14ARE05 (DA0LS3MBAF0) – 25Q80DVN1G Flash Is All FF, USB-C PD Stuck at 5V
          by ekozeko333
          Hi all,
I’m trying to recover a Lenovo Yoga Slim 7-14ARE05 with board DA0LS3MBAF0 Rev:F. I’ve run into an unusual issue where USB-C PD is stuck at 4.7–5V and the system won’t boot (keyboard lights flash briefly, then nothing).
🔥 The Problem Started After Suspected ESD/PD Fault
I experienced a power issue or ESD event through a USB-C charger
After that, the NX20P5090 power switch was visibly burned and was replaced
Now the PD controller always negotiates 5V @ 2A, even with known-good chargers

Nikon D800 camera - flash don’t work and capacitor don’t charge
          by corrize
          Hello, I'm stuck in troubleshooting…
The flash system works like that : when the (mechanic) flash button is pressed, the flash mecanically pop up, and a circuit buck boost elevate 7v (batt) to 200-300v (?) for charging the big capacitor. And when the photo shoot button is pressed, the capacitor is discharged in the xeon light.

In the D800, there is a first « power board » close to the battery. 2 wires (batt 7v) goes to another little « flash board ». I measured 7v, so ok.
When I press the flash button, it's detected by the system, flash icon appear on LDC display....

Canon VIXIA HF S10 A read data from inernal flash memory.
          by abajor
Hello I've had somebody bring in one of these charming little cameras to attempt retrieving data from the internal 32GB flash.
Something is damaged inside the cameras lens assembly I can hear it clunking around and it has probably dislodged the sensor, powering up the camera gives a blank screen and the focus motor sounds like it's having a fit.
The camera will not connect to a computer via USB in this state, I have no options no navigation, just power up and focus/zoom motor noises.

I think my best shot is to figure out a way to read the internal flash memory outside...
