What lab pwr. supply to get?

I have a board that have a short, not sure is where. So i need power supply to inject some voltage and see what is getting hot.

So, do cheap aliexpress pwr supply will do the job? I'm not a professional, I fix my own laptop and friends if broke, not intensive.

Ir i could make my own from ATX PSU?

Would this do the job for 1V rail: aliexpress "PS1502"?

    thats total crap

IM VERY HAPPY with this little boy. its little but VERY usefull, great adjustable and it shows power consumption wich is TOP for laptop repair. i charge even autobattery with it. u just need a little fan and a 60W and more PSU. im using laptop charger

    https://www.aliexpress.com/item/DPS5...AbTest=ae803_3

u can buy 5A version/DPS5005/ from 20euros or more powerfull up to 20A

Re: What lab pwr. supply to get?

15V 2A PSU won't cut it for laptop repair.
I recommend at the very least 30V 5A

With 30V you can at least go to 20V if you need to inject full voltage directly into power connector/B+ of laptop motherboard (don't do that randomly or you'll kill CPU/GPU, but sometimes it's useful).

Also 2A is often not enough to detect a short. For example if you want to inject in a 1V rail that has a 0.2ohm short to ground, with a 2A it'll be 0.8W of power, not enough to catch anything heating up. With 5A this would be 5W, well enough to make something heat up.

I'm also using some DPS buck converter.
      I have a DPS5015 with a "LED PSU" 50V 15A and a DPS8005 with a "LED PSU" 80V 5A.
A real lab PSU has everything integrated into so it's a better in that regard but it's way more expansive for the same power.

I bought myself uni-t UTP3315TFL 30V 5A power supply and it is cheap (in my country about 90USD) and small, i think it is the best choice for us beginners

That DPS is totally awesome. with that watmeter i can tell exactly if laptop is totally not work or always rails is working or is shorted or athers states

Just ordered dp30v5al, same principle as DPS3005, but without fancy screen and some features. For half the price. Neat.

Re: What lab pwr. supply to get?

Just received it. Long time, but worth it. There is nothing similar to buy at this price of range in my country.

This power supply is not bad. Very cute.

Injected 1Volt to my x555ld motherboard, and heats up processors north bridge.

                Quality is good.

                Very like that 7segment display.

Vizio e601i-A3 - Has Sound and Display, But No Backlight - Bad Power Supply Board or Bad LED Bulbs ?
                  by Tynan Dill
I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

                  Assuming...

Desoldering gun station modified to use a 18 volt @ 20 amp switching power supply
                  by sam_sam_sam
I have wanting to do this project for quite sometime now and I finally found a switching power supply that will work on this desoldering gun station ZD-915 that the original switching power supply took a shit and just was not worth trying to fix it because this switching power is not quite big enough to handle the heater element and the vacuum pump

One note when I tested the switching power supply and the voltage control board I noticed that this desoldering gun heat up much faster than the original switching power supply which I was really surprised by to the point that I might buy...

Modification to a ZD-987 desoldering/soldering station using a external switching power supply
                  by sam_sam_sam
I have been working on this concept for quite some time now with limited success but recently I found a switching power supply that is setup for the voltage that this soldering station needs to operate at however it also needs part of the secondary circuit from the original switching power because you need several voltage rails

I once tried to get a ZD-915 desoldering station to work on a 18 volt battery power supply but unfortunately things did not go well but I did find a work around but I might try this idea again but going at a little differently more about this another time...

Hi, Can we use SMPS Bench Power Supply for Laptop troubleshooting?
                  by shamsudeen
Hi all, I just need to know that, can i use SMPS type power supply to test and short circuit detection on a laptop motherboard?
I saw 95% of repair guys are using only Linear bench power supply. linear bench power supply is pricy, thats why i planned to get one SMPS supply.

i know that in linear power supply the noise will be very low comparing to SMPS supply....

                  Russound CA4 Power Supply Repair
                  by CMCM
                  Hello Everybody,

Trying to repair a power supply from a Russound CA4 Multizone Controller (picture attached)

Russound no longer supports it but were kind enough to provide a schematic of the power supply (pdf attached).

The outputs marked 12v and 20v are all measuring only 1v.

The board is clicking, which I think means it is in something called hiccup mode when the flyback transformers switches because of an internal problem or something else on the board Overloading it.

The capacitors physically look clean (no bludgesor leaks) and...
