    Pavilion G6 High temps

So I got this G6 from a customer saying "you can have it". It was used in an auto shop for a diagnostics program

    It's an AMD F1 socket model (A6-4400)

When I got it, the fan was spinning a lot, I got HW monitor on there and it showed the temps idling at 100 and reaching as high as 125c. Taking it apart, I removed the crappy thermal crud, used arctic silver 5, but not much. Temps were the same. I thought there was a gap so I got a pure copper square and gooped both sides with AS5

temps dropped but not by much. They maxed out at about 110, but idled at about 80-85c

voltages show normal, so is this a bad temp sensor? everything else seems to be working ok

Can you place your hand near the vent openings for the fan or is it to hot?

I did clean the little dust out of the sink fins. It was pretty clean. What it blows out is mostly cool-warm air when it revs up

Heat pipes do fail. The fluid can leak out.

Take heatpipe from your computer. Then warm one end of the pipe with soldering iron, at the same time controlling temperature on the other end of the pipe. If temperature doesn't constantly growing, then you'll need to replace defective pipe.

Interesting I did not know they had heatpipes. I will have to look that one up. so what type of fluid do they usually use for laptops

well I warmed one side, my iron is minimum at 350c, the fins reach 300c in a few seconds. So, not sure what the problem is here

well hwmon showed it booting at 109C. Its an A4 Mobile AMD APU. Is the temperature sensor on the cpu or motherboard with this one?

Is there discrete graphics with the mobo?
If has then it might be the culprit. If not then the heat sink copper tube.

no graphics, all on the APU

I said above I heated the copper sink with my iron and used my temp gun and it transferred the heat pretty fast, so I think its good. Looks like a bad temp sensor to me, but not sure I should replace the CPU or motherboard

                          Then try replacing the APU.

I'm thinking of changing out this A6 for an A8 quad core. Same die, tdp, socket. Effectively making the g6 a g7. Should be ok? Ive done it before with old core 2 based pdcs to full core 2

You most likely have check this, but I remember on some HP they have a setting in the bios for the fan. Turning it on active.

I wonder then if the temperature sensor is not turning on the fan quickly enough? Or is the fan running all the time and the temperature stays hot?
Again most likely you checked these things, but you never know when someone forgets.

no fan stays on all the time, boots hot. Got the A8, didn't expect the die size to be bigger, and it boots "hotter" (130C). I say put it in quotes because i'm pretty sure the thermocouple on the motherboard is bad and its not actually 130C. So I have to get a motherboard. Not cheap, well not too bad for this laptop

i'm just tempted to cut my losses if the board is too much. I have a barely used lenovo with a i3 and busted screen. Might just get a new screen and an Dell PA -> Lenovo plug adapter (this is a lenovo with one of those wierd shaped adapters, but dual rail and can take a PA-12 just fine)

Have you informed HP as this might be a design problem.

I just googled and it seems to be a known problem. Too bad, even if it was within warranty, I already voided the warranty by taking it completely apart. It is a bad thermocouple.

oh and I was wrong the lenovo wasn't an i3, but an A10 elite quad core. barely even used
