    Compaq CQ58 no power

    Hi

I have a Compaq CQ58 which has an intermittent power up issue. It only manages to power up once every circa twenty power cycles.

When it powers up, it boots to windows without any issues.

When it doesn't, the screen does not turn on and also there is not output on the VGA out.

Also, the POST card is giving me random codes, which are 11, 1D, 15 and 16.

I have also replaced the CMOS battery and given a hard reset but no luck.

Is this a case of CPU/GPU replacement? Any ideas?

    System information as below:

    Compaq Model: CQ58-300SA
    Compaq Motherboard P/N: 688303-501

    P/N: 010172W00-600-G
    NEWTON_BR_HPC
    MV_MB_V1

    CPU: EM1200GBB22GV
    GPU: 218-0755113

    Thanks

      Re: Compaq CQ58 no power

Hi, How can I flash BIOS when the BIN file is encrypted? I extracted the below exe file and the BIN file inside is 01885.BIN.

      Compaq SP file: http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp66501-67000/sp66770.exe

      Thanks

What do you mean encrypted? just flash the bin file with programmer.

          Re: Compaq CQ58 no power

When sp66770.exe is extracted, the BIOS file is 01885.bin

This BIOS file is not suitable to use with the EEPROM programmer because it is encrypted.

I just found out that the proper bin file can be decrypted using Phoenix Tool 2.50.

This application will create a BIN and a SIG file. Then this BIN file can be used with the programmer.

It's not from the BIOS. After flashing the original BIOS using an SPI Flash programmer the issue persists.

            Any ideas?

            Thanks

Reflowing the GPU did not help. I will replace the device (218-0755113).

Hi, No it doesn't unfortunately. I have also tried hard reset many times but no luck

I am finding it strange how the BIOS POST is acting. Stopping on codes 11, 13, 15 ,16 17 ,1c and 1d randomly but I cannot find what these mean for Insyde BIOS.

When I unplug the RAM the POST card gives code 50.

                    Thanks

On this particular model, there were no heatsink and/or pads on the GPU, strange uh?

                          No. typical for this generation

                          Even sony vaio does this.

Take out the silicon around the chip and reflow it.

Had a cq58 almost same crap. No power.

Had a blown fet near dc jack. It went bad because if lcd cable. First problem was no backlight. I force it to power and the notebook blew up like fireworks.(entry fet)
Change the fet, replace coil from lcd, new cable and it was like new.

Should have seen how much fumes a fet can make

Yes I have seen FETs doing that The die will glow white until it burns!

I don't have much experience on laptop hardware but I'm slowly getting there.

Is there an easy way for removing the red silicon? I usually use a heat gun and scratch it away.

I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

                                          Hi all!

I'm trying to troubleshoot a Microsoft Surface Pro (5th gen) model 1796 that won't power on. Motherboard model is M1007506-015. My priority is retrieving data, but the SSD is integrated so it looks like if I can't repair it it'll need to go to a data recovery company. I've done a little basic board repair before, but nothing this advanced until now. So please forgive my ignorance in advance. 😅

I found the boardview for this laptop in the forums here, and am able to open it on my PC with FlexBV.

                                          Hi all,

TL;DR - this laptop is driving me nuts with the oddball power-related behaviors. Appreciate any insight you can provide!

I'm experiencing a power issue on an Asus Probook P5440UF-XB74. Although I've worked with electronics and computers for decades, this is my first attempt at getting into motherboard-level component troubleshooting. Any help the community can provide is greatly appreciated!

A few weeks ago I was using the laptop (on battery power) for a Zoom meeting. The battery was running very low (long meeting) but I wasn't worried about...

                                          Compaq CQ58 with power issues

I'm trying to fix a Compaq CQ58 with power issues. Initially I noticed that it would run on mains power but not on battery, but I have since discovered that it is actually extremely sensitive to the DC power input voltage.

For instance, if I set the charger input to the full 19.5V then everything is normal and it runs absolutely perfectly. However, if I reduce it even to 19.0V it will boot to BIOS level but then just switch off as soon as I put any load on the system (e.g. by running a memory diagnostic). Presumably this explains why it won't run at all on the 11.1V battery supply....

Desoldering gun station modified to use a 18 volt @ 20 amp switching power supply

I have wanting to do this project for quite sometime now and I finally found a switching power supply that will work on this desoldering gun station ZD-915 that the original switching power supply took a shit and just was not worth trying to fix it because this switching power is not quite big enough to handle the heater element and the vacuum pump

One note when I tested the switching power supply and the voltage control board I noticed that this desoldering gun heat up much faster than the original switching power supply which I was really surprised by to the point that I might buy...
