    How to troubleshoot fault with SATA detection

    Hi, just thought I would try this forum in case any one had some experience of this issue.

    The machine is a Toshiba Satellite L500 (core i3).

    Fault is ; no HDD detected in BIOS. Does not detect HDD on boot/ However, the internal optical drive is detected.

    Just for clarity, the problem is not a faulty HDD, it appears to be something with the motherboard. As I see it, could be either (a) southbridge chip bga problem; (b) BIOS corrupt; (c) bad SATA connector or faulty smt cap / resistor between connector and southbridge (South Bridge: ICH9-M)

    Or perhaps its something else I have not thought about.

    Does anyone know if there is some software I could use, presumably booted from a CD, which could check the ICH9 bus itself. Or, is there a known common fault with these chips, etc.

      I'd check the connector and BIOS settings before the more complicated stuff.

          In my case it needed a bios update. (Bios was never updated yet since delivery.)
          Newer HDD's seem to need other bios settings.

              Remove the optical drive and test with just the HDD drive. Sometimes a bad optical drive can cause such symptoms.

                  If intel PCH ibex peak, it is a well known problem with recognizing sata hdd's (errata 21)

                      I have the above mentioned bord after repair, which was related to a lot of missing smd devices on the back of the board.
                      There were almost 20 devices missing, caps, resistors and some diodes/mosfets.
                      The board is generally working now, all PCIe ports are working, Windows installs normally.

                      However I have a problem with SATA ports 4-7 (the board has 8 SATA ports) - disks are not beeing recognized by the BIOS neither by Windows (which is usually normal in case BIOS does not recognize them).

                      Need help to solve some problems with this laptop.

                      After working in bed with it one night and heating up too much (probably the cause of this problems) the sata HDD OS windows froze
                      After restart the original Sata HDD was not recognized anymore (but works fine in other laptops or PCs)

                      Tried connecting other good Sata 2.5 HDDs but not one is working in this laptop anymore (not the original nor others)

                      Before this had happened I observed some other problems:

                      Panasonic SA-MAX770PU SMPSU board fault....

                      Hello everyone. 😀

                      As per thread title, this unit has a serious SMPSU fault. It blows F1001, which is a 10A M205 in the phase from the mains input.
                      Very first thing I tried, was simply replacing the fuse, but the replacement ceramic fuse blew immediately.

                      Looking at the schematic for this PSU, I then removed what I thought was the next likely candidate: D1001 - the HV main bridge rectifier.
                      This isolated the fault(no longer blows the main fuse), but does not point me to the actual fault.
                      There are no devices that have exploded or otherwise show signs...

                      ESR meter came to the rescue again today with a PLC I/O card fault

                      I have been having a fun time at work with two pieces of equipment that had shorted components or shorted component cables to machine frame
                      I would check what my multi meter was telling me about how many ohms I getting with the multi meter was telling versus the ESR was telling me about weather or not it really was a short to machine ground or not

                      One note at first we thought that it might be a bad I/O card or a malfunction PLC including me as well but I thought I would try and see if removing the I/O cables would make a difference or not and this time it did make a difference...
