    Macbook Pro A2289 EMC 3456, MLB 820-1987-A, broken U6903, stuck at 5v

    Dear friends,
a close friend of mine gave me this machine, she told me that the last days the fan was going high and that it was heating up too much for the usual things, and that suddenly one morning it didn't start anymore .
I opened it and inspected carefully with a high magnifying lens, found no oxydized spots but a short on PPBUS_G3H , then a blown U6903.
    I changed U6903 with a new one, PPBUS_G3H became 558 (measuring with red probe to gnd , and black on F7000) , PP3V3_G3H_RTC 463.
Now when I plug the usbc cable (original Apple 61W power supply), nothing starts automatically, if I press the power button nothing happens, and these are the measures I have:

(Impedance with no powersupply - voltage)
    PPDCIN_G3H 702 - 5.06
    D3370 PP20V_USBC_XB_VBUS 130 - 0.00
    PPBUS_G3H 558 - 12.00
    PP3V3_S5 351 - 0.26
    PP3V3_G3H_PMU_VDDMAIN 398 - 0.02
    PP5V_G3H_LDO 0.00
    PP5V_G3S 421 - 0.01
    C3200 PP3V3_G3H_RTC 313 - 3.21
    C3205 PP1V5_UPC_XB_LDO_CORE 487 - 1.54
    C3208 PP3V3_UPC_XB_LDO 508 - 3.21
    C3105 PP1V5_UPC_XA_LDO_CORE - 1.54
    C3108 PP3V3_UPC_XA_LDO - 3.21
    C3102 PP1V8_SLPS2R 389 - 0.36
    R3023 UPC_XA_VDDIO_CFG - 1.55

I noticed that PP1V8_SLPS2R is 0.36 but I don't know if it should rise before or after CD3217 switches PPDCIN_G3H to 20v.
It seems that the mainboard is stuck at 5v, I tried to revive the T2 firmware but other macbooks don't find it connected or in DFU mode (using the rightmost port looking it from left side, the farthest from the screen) .
I tried to connect the DFU port to a Macbook Air updated to MacOS 14, but Finder doesn't show any macbook connected, when I tried a simple Apple power supply chargin cable, OS asked to connect "the correct Thundebolt cable".
I tried a complete thunderbolt cable, a simple Apple power supply chargin cable, and a data+chargin cable, but the mac isn't seen...
I tried to force the DFU mode following instructions on Apple website but nothing helped.

Please, what can you suggest to measure or test?
    Many thanks

Remove all power. Meter in resistance mode.

What is the resistance in ohms to ground for PP5V_G3S? (can measure @ L7670)

Still with no power, what is the resistance to ground for:

    SMBUS_3V3_BATT_SCL
    SMBUS_3V3_BATT_SDA

      Hi mon2
      thank you for the suggestion.
I have an old meter, put it at 200k resistance mode, red probe to GND, and I have:

      PP5V_G3S 31.2k
      SMBUS_3V3_BATT_SCL 6.1k
      SMBUS_3V3_BATT_SDA 6.1k

        No shorts here.

What is the resistance to ground of PP5V_G3H_LDO?

Would you have a USB-C meter? If not, it will help on this and future repairs. What is the voltage and current draw of the logic board on the USB-C meter?

I'm sad but at the moment I don't own any usbc meter, I was thinking about buying one soon because usbc-things have become quite popular...
Sorry for the off-topic, but since we are talking about it, can you suggest a nice model , that have a good balance between quality and cost?

                MacBook Pro A2289 820-01978 stuck on 20V 0amp
                by mferna14
Hi Dear Friends., Working on a MacBook Pro A2289 820-01978 stuck on 20V. Not taking any amps. Sometime it just jumps to .01 amp & that's it. PPDCIN_G3H (20V), FUSE F7000 (12V) & 3.3V & 5V are perfect on the motherboard & even the battery charges very well & this is the only time I see the amps start to increase charging the battery. Where should I start???? I do not see the power or power rail sequence in the schematics, is there any matching board to start my troubleshooting. Your help will be greatly appreciate. Thanks in advance

                Hello everyone.

I have a problem finding the problem. MacBook came with a damaged flex usb c, 3 pins were shorted. No water damage.

                Voltages I have:
                pp3v3 g3h rtc
                pp1v5 upc xb ldo core
                pp1v5 upc xa ldo core
                pp3v3 upc xb ldo
                pp3v3 upc xa ldo
                ppbus g3h - 12.2V

what I found is that there is no nand power supply
                no 1.8v, 2.5v, 0.9v

Please give me some tips and help.
                Regards

                Greetings everyone.
I've been trying to resolve the above problem, I need insight into the next step to take. This will be my first time handling this kind of machine hence, any replacement part will need to be ordered for since I do not have replacement parts.

                readings on the MB:
                PPBUS_G3H is present (12.23v)
                PP3V3_G3H is present (3.27v)
                PP1V8_SLPS2R is present (1.7v)

                The C-ports behavior:

The port that communicated with U3200 delivered the above readings although the u3900, u3100, u3200 regions warmed up.

                However, the...

                MacBook Pro 13 inch A2238 M2 stuck on 5V
                by Bmet
                Hi,

I have a MacBook Pro 13 inch A2238 M2 and it was stuck 5V with 0 amps. I measured some important lines and I found a short on PP3V8_AON_MPMU_ISNS_VIN, I tried injecting 1v and I saw heat coming from the mPMU so I removed the pmu thinking that was the problem. I don't know why I didn't check the other side of the border but there it was, a shorted cap. I replaced the cap and the short was gone, so I reballed the PMU and put it on again but voltage was still stuck at 5V and the current was fluctuating between 0 and 0.45 amps. I checked under the thermal camera and I saw the mPM...

                MacBook Pro 2018 A1989 820-00850-A Stuck at 5.00V and 0.150A
                by MyronViegas
                Hey guys,

I got a MacBook Pro a1989 820-00850-A dead for repair. The MacBook itself was off for a month or so and it didn't power on. I tested using ammeter and it was stuck on 5v. Opened the machine and found a short on ppbus_g3h, corrosion near the right spkr_amp. removed the spkr_amp and saw short on ppbus_g3h. plugged in to power, boosted to 20v .600A and then back down to .300A. Trackpad was clicking when on .600A but no image etc.

Later, I tried again but it dropped down to 5v and never boosted back to 20V. checked board again and found ppbus_g3h shorted again....
