    MacBook M1 Pro 14" 2021 A2442 (820-02098) — U2020 getting hot, board not powering on

    Hi everyone,

    I have a MacBook Pro M1 14” (board 820-02098) with a broken LCD panel (matrix damaged).
    The board does not power on — when connected to power it draws about 5.1 V / 0.474 A (~2.45 W) and stays at that level, with no fan spin or display activity.
    Using a thermal camera, I noticed that U2020 heats up to over 70 °C shortly after connecting power.
    According to the schematic, U2020 is a SN74AVC2T45RSWR (Texas Instruments) 2-bit bidirectional level shifter.
    There are no visible signs of liquid damage anywhere on the board.
    Given the broken LCD, the board might have suffered an impact, but I have no confirmation of this.
    I haven’t performed other measurements yet — I’d like to ask if anyone has seen this behavior before on this model, and what steps you would recommend to diagnose the cause.

    U2020 should not be so toasty.

    Measure the voltage to ground for the power rails:

    PP1V2_AWAKE
    PP1V8_AWAKE


    Suggest to flux, remove and replace this part with a fresh one if the power rails are at normal values. Not suspecting the series resistors to be an issue but you can inspect them to be safe.

      Thanks for your advice mon2.

      I checked the rails:
      • PP1V2_AWAKE = ~1.2 V (looks normal)
      • PP1V8_AWAKE = ~1.55 V (instead of 1.8 V)
      With the board off, resistance to ground on PP1V8_AWAKE (measured at C2021 / C2030 / pin 8 of U2020) is about 004 Ω on my meter in continuity mode — basically the same as shorting the probes together.

        Flux and carefully remove U2020. Keep note of the pin #1 orientation. To be safe, do not power up without the part but this is only a level shifter between 2 different voltage rails.

        Then test the resistance to ground @ C2021 again. What is the resistance in ohms? Be sure to use the resistance scale to measure in ohms.

          • Removed U2020 (SN74AVC2T45).
          • After removal, resistance PP1V8_AWAKE → GND @ C2021 is still ~0.40 Ω.
          • Injected ~1 V @ 1 A on PP1V8_AWAKE (C2021).
          • With thermal camera, U2010 warms up to ~40 °C, slightly hotter than surroundings, but nothing gets burning hot.

            Are you in resistance mode or diode mode? During the injection, did you sink the 1A current? With such a hard short, any current you dial up will be consumed. Try 3A or more. Someone will heat up if truly at this low resistance. Confirm if the meter face is in ohms.

              Sorry mon2, apologies — earlier I mistakenly reported PP1V8_AWAKE as ~0.40 Ω. That was incorrect (wrong scale/continuity mode).

              Corrected measurements:
              • Probes short = 0.05 Ω.
              • PP1V8_AWAKE → GND = ~4.0 Ω (200 Ω range).
              • Power injection:
                • 1.0 V / 3 A limit → ~0.2 A draw (CV).
                • 1.5 V / 3 A limit → ~0.4 A draw (CV).
              • No clear hotspot with thermal cam or IPA during injection.

                At ~4.0 Ω, this is the wrong resistance for PP1V8_AWAKE ​so something is wrong. The hunt for the defective part will not be simple.

                As a wild guess - flux and remove LR501 and LR502 off the board. Measure the resistance again. In the past month or so, had a macbook where the unit would not power up and the student reported sudden death. In the end, it was the audio amplifier section with a shorted cap. No schematics for the audio board ($110 USD on Aliexpress for a replacement) so plucked off each bulk cap, one at a time. There were only 5 or so on this small board. Found the bad boy and the unit powered up fine after this fix.

                The current draw is correct for the injection you are performing. Do not inject a higher voltage than the voltage of this rail.

                  Thanks for the help so far. Here is what I tested today:
                  • Removed and tested:
                    • C2021, C2030, C2041, C2010 → resistance unchanged (~4 Ω).
                    • U2030 & U2040 (SN74AVC1T45 level shifters) → resistance unchanged.
                    • LR501 / LR502 removed: on pin-2 side (codec rails) resistance is high; on pin-1 side (PP1V8_AWAKE) still ~4 Ω.
                  • Injection test:
                    • Injected 1.5 V / 3 A into the rail (at C2041).
                    • With thermal camera + IPA, the only device that consistently shows activity under injection is U2010, which heats slightly (~40 °C, mostly on the upper side near C2010). (video attached)

                  What do you recommend as the next step? Would it be worth removing U2010 and U2000 for confirmation? At the moment I don’t have a donor board and I don’t have stencils for reballing these ICs.

                    Update:
                    • After removing U2010, the resistance on PP1V8_AWAKE → GND increased from ~4 Ω to ~8 Ω.
                    • Power injection at 1.5 V~0.15A (CV), no visible hotspot (thermal + IPA).
                    • U2010 off-board: VCC–GND ≈ 6 Ω → clearly leaky; will replace.
                    • U2000 off-board measured high resistance; reinstalled → rail still ~8 Ω.

                      • Checked resistor dividers / pull-ups (R2020–R2025, R2030–R2032, RD215, RD216, RR664, RR734) → PP1V8_AWAKE side low, signal side high.
                      • Confirmed short not on SoC side of I²C lines (pin toward SoC always OL/high).
                      • Removed UR600 (IC on the rail) → no change.
                      • Began isolating speaker amp blocks:
                        • Removed UR700 → resistance rose to ~12 Ω.
                        • Removed UR730 → resistance rose further to ~32 Ω.
                          • Checked its pads (pins 12, 18, 19, 23, 26, 27, 29, 30) → all OL/high.
                        • Finally removed UR760 → resistance became very high (rail clean).
                          • All its pads OL/high → maybe UR760 itself internally leaky?
                      Current status

                      Two confirmed bad parts:
                      1. U2010 (leaky SPI flash, ~6 Ω off-board).
                      2. UR760 (audio amplifier block, maybe internally leaky).

                        • I replaced U2010 and U2020 with parts taken from a donor board.
                          Now I have:
                        • PP1V2_AWAKE = 1.22 V
                        • PP1V8_AWAKE = 1.77 V
                        1. In both cases, the Mac is detected in DFU mode by Apple Configurator, but when I try to restore it I get this error:
                          Unable to restore system on this device.
                          Unexpected device state 'DFU' expected 'Recovery' (Probably forced into DFU mode externally)
                          [com.apple.MobileDevice.MobileRestore – 0xFAE (4014)]

                          Any advice on what to check next would be greatly appreciated.However, the Mac still does not power on.
                        2. With the battery connected: power adapter negotiates 20.63 V, 0 A, 0 W.
                        3. With the battery disconnected: 5.192 V, 0.182 A, 0.996 W.

                          Test if you have ssd power rails. Confirm if you have the TPS62180 regulators onboard as they are a common point of failure. When they die, often the ssd will be hit by the high voltage from ppbus_aon. Check the iBoff video on this topic on YT. They stopped using the tps62180 on m4 units.

                                I'm working on a MacBook Pro A2442 (14", 2021) that's not powering on. On two out of three USB-C ports, I get 5V and the current briefly ramps up to around 0.210A before dropping to 0.036A. On the third port (JF600), I only get 0.0045A and it stays there.

                                Initially, I suspected a faulty CD3217 on that port, especially since I noticed signs of previous liquid damage near the JF600 USB connector. I replaced the CD3217 with an UF400 (from an A2442 donor board from the same location). According to the supplier, this should be a compatible version, but the behavior...

                                Hi all,

                                i got a Macbook A2442 which statrts normal but is not showing any picture. Using an external monitor works fine. After opening the Macbook i found a dried up line of liquid damage around CN979, RD503, and UP730. I cleaned up everything and also unsoldered the chips to clean the pads. There were no shorts before but i still don't have any picture. Sometimes you can see a glimpse of light in the middle of the display.
                                So before i change the whole display i want to make sure that it's not any issue with the logicboard. So any ideas what i can check next?...

                                I have a Macbook Pro A2442 with the 820-02098 from a friend which has no picture on the display, however, the backlight works.
                                He was streaming a football match on a questionable site, then the site crashed, and the problem emerged.
                                Initially, he sent it to apple, who quoted him £1323.95 to replace the display, lid angle sensor and top case.

                                Hi all,
                                I have a MacBook Pro A2442 with board 820-02098-A very highly oxydated (water) by an accident.
                                The customer just need to recover the data (no backups, heh), so we cleaned fully to make it power on.
                                Fortunately the Mac is still alive but it shows an exclamation mark in a circle (!) (Apple T2 fw issue?) with the text "support.apple.com/mac/restore" and doesn't go further.

                                We tried to interface with another Mac, but can't get in DFU. Very likely the keyboard is gone too because the water, so we're planning to buy a cheap compatible one just to....
