MBP A2289 board 820-01987 Bad U3200?

Just looking for a second opinions before I try to source a CD3217
Rear USBC sits at 5.1V 0.01A
Forward USBC power cycles.

PPBUS_G3H 7.5-8.3V cycles with rear USB, Cycles 0-12.5V on forward USBC

PP3v3_G3H_RTC ~3.9V with rear USBC, cycles 0-5.1 on forward USBC.

PP3v3_UPC_XB_LDO diode drop reads about 0.074V

I'm almost positive it's U3200 (its also the only thing getting warm on thermal camera) second opinions always helpful.

If U3200 is heating up, remove all power. Meter in resistance mode. Measure the resistance to ground of each and every power rail linked to this device. Someone is shorted and causing an excessive load which is resulting in heat.

Confirm it in resistance mode. What is the resistance in ohms? Someone at the output is shorted here.

Both directions read the same! Measuring from c3208.

Flux and remove C3208. Test if the resistance to ground changes to a normal range. If not, U3200 is very likely to be defective. Flux and remove U3200 to confirm.

U3200 definitely the culprit reading 1Mohm without it.
Now I'm assuming I must source a CD3217 which is flashed for an a2289 in the U3200 position?

Yes, unless proven otherwise, use devices from a donor board and from the same position for the replacement parts.

Be 100% sure to source parts with the same markings as the original. Do request donor parts from the same position due to the OTP (one time programmable) firmware embedded inside each such power delivery controller.

The search thus far is not great. Plenty of stuff on AliExpress which claim compatible with my model, but no indication of which U3XXX position. If I find A vendor I'll update, might just need to buy donors in hopes of finding a good one.

Following vendor just chatted to say the locations do not matter on A2289 repair. The parts are from original board and have been reballed. Just solder in to repair.

Hmmm interesting, from what I've read one of the issues is many of the bigger mac pro's like the A2141 they flash an I2C address into a one time flashable rom, I'm sure there's other things flashed into the room too. I will give a try and report back. I might have a doner if location truly doesn't matter.

I just picked up a CD3217 from Amazon which claims to be compatible with my unit. I've improved in that U3200 is no longer shorted on the LDO regs, it's not heating up. The jack that feeds U3200 power cycles. The Jack that powers U3100 stays at 5.2V .4A. My power up sequence stops at P5VG3S_EN staying low.
I have one more CD3217 which I can try from an identical board from the U3100 position. I may try swapping it if there aren't other things I need to check for P5VG3S_EN staying low.

Do you think the unit will DFU when the jack corresponding to U3200 (The forward most one) power cycles?

To answer that question it's not detecting in apple configurator.

The only other thing I see on thermal is the U6903 buck converter is active and warmish under thermal. Output voltage at the inductors is 3.3V

I ended up buying a liquid damaged A2289. After ultrasonic cleaning and replacing and reflowing some passive components I could see that both USBC connectors would request 20V from my Power supply, stabilize for a few seconds then reboot.

Instead of searching that problem I chose to harvest the U3200 CD3217 and put it on the customer machine.

I saw that both ports were requesting 20V after the swap so I put it back together.

The laptop boots right up; however, only the U3100 USBC jack powers up and charges the laptop. The U3200 USBC causes my inline power meter to rapidly strobe on an off.

After a PRAM reset it appears to work in one position. But one rotation of the USBC jack causes a slow on off strobing on my power meter.

I don't currently have the password to test the laptop further but confirmed that the Donor most be from an identical model and position for the A2289.
