MSI MS-16W1 no power, EC replaced by other.

Hi, I'm working on a MSI laptop, Motherboard number MS-16W11, GF-65 Thin 10SDR-459US. Went to another shop because the screen was flickering, but it was working well on an external monitor. The LCD was ordered and the laptop was returned to the customer and it no longer worked. It was then sent to another tech (by the shop who ordered the LCD) and the EC (ENE KB9028Q) was replaced with a donor from another MSI board with different board number and no programming was done. It looks like work was done on PU6 (TPS51225) as well as one of the GPU mosfets was burnt (I removed all three GPU mosfets).
I ordered programmed EC chips from China and I also purchased a RT809F in the event that I needed to program the chips.
When I install the EC chip the laptop did not power on. It draws 30mA then 50mA when I press the power button and after 10secs it drops to 20mA. If I connect the battery, it draws 490mA and the battery charging light comes on.
I'm using known good RAM and a new RTC battery.
There is no voltage on any of the coils but I do get 3.3V at the power button.
I tried reading and writing a downloaded EC image but I keep getting verification errors, I read and compared the hex files and they were different so I believe the programming failed. I suspect that the tracks from the keyboard connector to the EC is too long. Since I ordered more than one chip, I replaced it and I'm hoping it's the correct firmware.
My first question is does battery charging indicate that the EC is working AND has the correct firmware and of course, any assistance with this case is much appreciated.

    Hi!
No, the EC chip and the charging circuit do not necessarely need to work together. As you know, the battery charging can be done without booting the laptop. So, usually, the battery charging is an independent circuit. But of course, some flags like capacity, will be transferred to the CPU after booting.
You can check the EC chip with the CAPS-LOCK LED. If you can switch the CAPS-LOCK LED with the CAPS-Lock key on-and-off, then the EC chip is working properly.

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately the laptop is not booting so the caps lock test is not possible. +3VALW and +5VALW are present from PU6 but no boot.

Post#2 comments are misleading. Charging IC always work in tandem with EC controller via smbus communication.
At this point it seems to me EC is not properly flashed. Which EC is onboard?

Thanks for clearing up the confusion mcplslg123. I always read that caps lock test tells if the CPU is OK. The EC is an ENE KB9028Q, I'm not having any luck with the RT809F as I keep getting successful programming but failed verification, even reading verification fails. I located via points under the EC chip to connect the programmer and no luck. Not sure if it's a bad programmer, I even soldered the 47K resistor on the supplied KB9012 board (no caps) and soldered the chip to that board and the chip was not recognized.
At this point I'm going on the assumption that the programmed chips I purchased from China is properly flashed, this is the first time I'm replacing an EC so I don't have a trusted source for programmed chips.
I did start going through the power sequence and PM_SLP_S4# is not coming up. All other stages before are present for about 10 seconds after the power button is pressed.
          1. PW_SW# = 3.3V (SW1)
          2. SUS_ON = 3.3V (PU6)
          3. +3V/+5VSUS = 3.3V/ 5V both present for about 10sec (PU6)
          4. +1_8VSUS = 1.8V (PU20) NO STUFF, near PCH on side with USB but 1.8V present on pin 5
          5. +1.05VSUS = 1.05V (PU14)
          6. SUSPWROK = 3.03V (PU14) and U25 pin54
          7. RSMRST# = 3.3V (U25 pin95)

This will be an open-drain pin so the pull-up resistor with a pull-up voltage is mandatory. Locate the pull-up resistor and confirm the resistance of the resistor; the resistance to this pcb trace / pin and the pull-up voltage.

I think this is the origin of PM_SLP_S4# and the 2 other places it shows up in the schematic, is R367 is a pull-down resistor? It measures 100K in circuit.
The schematic is here msi ms-16w11 ver:1.1 need schematic - Badcaps

Not pull down but its pull up for R367.
PM_SLP_S4 will be released by PCH. So check PCH requirements, communication between SIO and PCH.

For 10 seconds you get all theese voltages? Have you checked 1.2vddq and 2.5v power supplies? those can be killing your power on sequence, check carefully, maybe a power good resistor has been knocked out or even the bios is not properly flashed, if other guys have messed up with the laptop you might aswell check if the bios has soldering traces.

mcplslg123 Can you guide me as to where I should start? Am I looking for I2C lines?
noipi I did turn off the verification but when I read the file after programming and compare them using HxD, the files are different. The original SIO is shorted but MSI has the EC file available for download
DeXXter Thanks for the suggestion, I'll look into it. I did measure resistance of all the coils and nothing looked out of range and I already tried the bios from MSI website.

I found a video showing the use of the supplied PCB to program the ENE chips, the technician didn't use a 47K resistor for R1, instead he used a jumper so I tried that and masked all the pads I don't need and I was able to write and verify a chip so I'll be removing that uncertainty from the process. I'll post an update after installing the verified SIO and checking the suggestions given.

I thought that maybe the bulb was somehow interfering with the normal operation of the power supply, so I replaced it with a fuse,...

I have a Dell Latitude 7410 with an Intel i7 10th Gen CPU. The USB Type-C port is not working, and since it's the only charging port on the device, I'm unable to charge the laptop.

I inspected the motherboard and found that the IC labeled TPS65988 had a short circuit. I ordered a replacement IC from Alibaba and replaced it. The short issue is now resolved, but the laptop still doesn't charge, and the Type-C port remains non-functional.

After doing some research, I found out that the TPS65988 needs to be programmed after replacement in order to function properly.

Hello guys, i need help with this problem, I have a NM-D041 mobo, it came with low impedance in 3v linear regulator rail, the cause was a damaged EC controller ITE8227e-192. I ordered a new one and replaced it. This laptop have a different chip for keyboard management and it8227e pins for programming ITE chips are not accesible through keyboard interface, I flashed it using i2c interface pins with vertyanov programmer because laptop was dead and SPI flash didn't have power (only 3v EC) so it couldn't access firmware stored in SPI memory. I read SPI and extracted it8227 firmware from original BIOS...

                            Hello lads,

Will give a quick summary. Bought this laptop as broken. Initial board had shorted SOC (VCCGT coil shorted to GND, checked all caps and just desoldered soc to confirm, dead short from VCCGT to GND on soc). I ordered a replacement board. Installed the new board laptop booted but display was flickering very ugly in bios. Horizontal and vertical artifacts. I thought the GPU is dead but it turned out it was some almost broken...
