Greetings badcaps community,
I havent done this for a long time and want to start it all again, after some evil and annyoing illness.
So I apologize in advance, if some phrases might sound a bit like gibberish or illogical to you.
Im trying my best to fully describe what I plan to achieve and hope I was choosing the right sub-forum for my new adventure.
I have a Elitebook 820 G1 and a Elitebook 840 G2 here.
These ask for a password when entering the BIOS, but boot just fine from the internal SSD.
I learned that desoldering and reflashing the chip would be the best way. But I dont have steady hands anymore.
So, Im looking for a cheap but durable allround BIOS programmer with a clamp, so I wont have to desolder the chip, as my hands arent able to do that anymore.
If I understood correctly, old BIOS files operate at 3,3v, newer ones at 1,80v. I can see there ar 80$ programmers and 12$ programmers.
For now I cant afford a 80$ programmer. And Im not sure which cheap one to purchase regarding the Elitebooks.
If I understood corectly I:
1.) Dump the original BIOS file 1st, using a software (and a programmer)
2.) Run RCUnlocker by dragging the dumped .bin files onto the .exe (compatible with older Elitebooks)
3.) Reflash the now fixed .bin, as it no longer would have a password.
4.) Be happy.
I also read about the 2MB EC chips as well, DMI and ME region and again, I havent worked with BIOS files for a long, long time.
Hence Im still unsure how, for example, the EC, DMI and ME region chip might be involved, regarding the BIOS password / flashing issue here.
I read on badcaps that donor BIOS files are "dirty" and only run on the original device. So I have to do it on my own, with hopefully some support from the badcaps community.
For now I was hoping that someone could point me at the right programmer and the right software to dump the Elitebooks BIOS files
to use RCUnlocker and be able to reflash it.
But I also read some people still had a password protected BIOS after reflashing it.
I tried to read most of the Elitebook 820/840 threads here, I read about 16mb, 32mb and modded 16mb chips.
Still a lot to read (and to understand), but Id love to dive back into this. At least partly. ;-)
If you reached this line, thank you!
In short my questions would be:
a.) Which "cheap" programmer with a clamp would you advice to me?
b.) Which software would be the most fitting/compatible and easy to use, to dump the BIOS with the programmer?
c.) 820 G1 / 840 G2 should be compatible with the RCUnlocker and I shall not worry regarding EC, DMI and ME Engine when attempting to remove the password. (?)
