ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 6 series fault

    - it is urgently recommended to update the bios to the latest version to prevent this series fault!
    - repaired 20 of them: in some cases all three chips have had to be replaced
    - all parts ordered here: mouser.com

    - exploded next gen fet (mainly used usb c port - replace it) - 20 times (15 times this was the only fault)
    TPD4S311YBFR
    TI USB Interface IC
    US HTS:8542390001 ECCN:EAR99 COO:PH
    - exploded ov protection ic
    FPF3380UCX
onsemi Power Switch ICs - Power Distribution
    TARIC:8542399000 ECCN:EAR99 COO:PH
-> you can use the predecessor (that fails in many x1 yoga gen 5 models for no reason, so maybe install the next gen one (5 V only on charger: FPF2281BUCX)
    - failed protection ic (only one side of usb c jack was charging in "off state")
    CSD87501L
    TI MOSFET
    TARIC:8542399000 ECCN:EAR99 COO:CN

    - damage under the ti fet can be very bad and you may need to reconstruct pads

    Happy repairing!

in addtition: you need to be aware of the underfill near and under the ti fets (scrape it away while blowing mid air, ap. 250 °C; these fets are NOT classic bga chips - they are firmly pressed on the pcb)

hi could you help with a problem i have

i have a X1 Yoga Gen 6 i removed U49 then read it and saved the bin file , then i wrote the bin fie to another winbond 256 and checked that it wrote the identical file ok to the
new chip but it always comes up with reading ME firmware and Failed to recover ME firmware also when i look in the bios setup the ME firmware is always missing
if i put the original chip in the ME firmware is displayed my question is does the X1 yoga winbond have a different serial no as the chips were identical i even checked with file compare

and there were no differences also i read the config and just QE was ticked in the config box

      which chips did you use?

are you sure the checksum was correct?

did you do a bios reset afterwards?

      did you load bios defaults?

I just came across one of these. The docking port USB-C works fine. It starts the computer and charges the battery. The main USB-C port stays @ 5V while drawing about 0.2A. If I plug in the battery, the voltage remains @ 5V while the current jumps to 3A.

You mentioned this issue is mostly caused by 3 components. If you venture to say, which of these components should I aim to replace? Thanks.

replacing Q263 (you really should use this chip as BGA just reball it) and U192 should be the standard procedure (sometimes the port is bad, too, due to bad solder quality).

I replaced both chips, same results. Is it possible that the PD controller only works for one port but not the other? Both USB-C ports appear to be in great shape.

did you check U6318? what voltage do you have on vbus20, after the chip?

The voltage stays @ 5V all the way to the PD controller. When plugged into the docking USB-C port, there are no issues. Computer charges and runs. It's the main charging USB-C port I am having issues with.

replace u6318. are you sure you soldered Q263 correctly?

I usually place a shunt between the source and the drain to bypass it while in test mode. The voltage still stays @ 5V when I do that.
