    sony VGN-G2 no USB drives

I have here a Japanese market Sony VGN-G2ABNS. By the specs this ultaportable laptop is very similar to a Sony VGN-TZ series but with a 12 inch XGA display. U7700 cpu, 945GMS chipset, 1 to 2 GB DDR2 RAM, 1.8" pata-ZIF hdd, etc. As received it came with windows 10 - Japanese language. After I noticed my problem I swapped in a TZ hdd with winows 7 pro 32 bit.

The problem I have with it is most USB devices do not work on it. Plug in a mouse or keyboard to either external port and that works fine. Any other device, either internal or plugged in will not work. Windows says "there is a problem with the unknown device" and "windows has stopped this device because it has reported a problem- code 43".

This affects the internal USB optical DVD drive, finger print reader, and any (known good) external USB such as a flash drive, camera, external powered DVD drive, cell phone, etc. The internal (or my external) DVD will spin up with a disc in it but doesn't appear in Explorer or device manager. Again, an external mouse or keyboard does work OK.

The internal DVD shows as "applicable" in Phoenix (trusted platform) BIOS, and "external boot device" is selected, but I can't boot from the DVD or any usb flash drive. The status LED on a flash drive does not blink - ever.

The G2 main board is MBX-180, and visually looks like a revision of the VGN-TX850/TXN series (MBX-153). I can't find schematics or anything for MBX-180. I measure 5.1V at both external USB port (power) pins. Unplugging any (all) USB cables from the board doesn't affect this problem.

I tested the USB data lines with DVOM in diode mode. All data lines read about 500mV (black lead) to ground (red lead). That's the same as my TZ.

CLK_USB48 circuit at the clock generator ( ICS 9LPR321BKLF) pin reads 48MHz.

I installed a 2 port USB 2.0 PC card in the card bus slot and that works normally for any device plugged into it - but I can't boot from it.

Any suggestions or ideas would be appreciated.

    thanks

Perhaps the usb cables being tested are not fully loaded? Suggest to purchase a known good usb 2.0 high speed (or usb 3.0 rated) data cable. This cable will offer vbus, D+, D-, ground lines for the usb 2.0 interface. You may be using only a usb charging cable with vbus and ground lines only. Amazon should have these but recommend a good branded cable and keep it short.

Sony XBR-65X750D Horizontal lines bottom of screen
      by ggil44
Hi, I have a Sony XBR-65X750D that has horizontal lines at the bottom 6 inches of the screen. These lines appear to be every other line because the picture is still quite visible behind those lines. The lines appear all the time with a few other lines above and below the 6 inch level blinking on and off at about 2 second intervals. I'm not sure if this is a panel issue or power supply/main board problem. I did replace the T-Con board without any change in the problem. Any suggestions you might have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,

Sony KD-55XG9505 lines on screen problem
      by Chrissygizmo
      Hello again everyone,

This is my latest mission, to try getting this Sony tv back to normal working order…

I've only just got it today, when you power it up everything is as should be, in fact it works perfectly for a few minutes then the screen starts getting horizontal lines on & eventually the full screen goes back, I will upload photos of the problem & also some photos of the board etc. You might notice that I'm busy trying the tape method, I'm not sure exactly where the clock lines are so I'm just guessing & hoping for the best lol . I've already tried...

Sony XBR-85X950G Gray horizontal lines and vertical picture shift diagnosis?
      by noisykid
5.5 year old 85 inch Sony Bravia X950G started showing gray horizontal lines across the bottom of the screen and the picture shifts slightly vertically when it happens. The lines sometimes get bigger/smaller vertically and bounce back. See the video for the problem. It seems to be happening after it warms up after an hour or so. Happens regardless of source. Right now there's nothing but power cable connected and it's happening. We did hook up a new Nintendo Switch to our HDMI switching receiver today, and played for a while with no issues, but this problem didn't occur til a few hours later while...
