Toshiba L500 power comes on, no display, no activity

Power, charge, power-on lights work, fan fires up, powers down normally too if you hold the button.

Has a separate ATi GPU card on it - tried reflowing it, had success for a couple of weeks but dead again. Not even sure if it is the GPU or just pure luck.

I've heard some inkling that the Southbridge is a faulty point, but I'm not even getting to the point where the BIOS even fires up yet.

Ideas?

Are you working it with a lab type power source or an adapter ? I mean can you tell how many amper it uses after power on ? if it is under 1 A then you can try to reflow GPU.

Sadly I don't have a suitable lab PSU to test it on.

For now I've just added the machine to the 'almost trash' pile.

Hi I think he might mean Tokin as in NEC/Tokin capacitor.
These have been mentioned before in relation to Toshiba problems.

Ah yes, of course, the NEC/Tokin cap, unfortunately this model doesn't use them ( I've replaced plenty of the other ones ). Thanks for the translation.

My satellite L645D died randomly one day. Wouldn't come out of sleep mode...
Something on the motherboard died, something which I couldn't track down..

i have same problem with my nec versa pro laptop.
My nec laptop can't show any thing on screen, when i press power button all the indicators on normally and fanes hdd runs normaly but can't boot, restarting again and again only show black screen. I opened it and found an ic named nec/ tokin OE128 broken/burned.
I want to know how can i fix it or change it? And i want to know, it is IC OR Capacitor? And which capacitor(uF/V?) i can use to replace it and fix problem.


Please help me any expert.

I've got a few more TOKIN/NEC replacements to do this weekend; for me I've found 10 x 100uF 1206 cermics works really well and easy to install.

For removing the NEC/TOKIN I just use a metal spudger to knock off the bulk of the capacitor, then use a 100W station + spudger to reflow/heat the remaining metal strip contacts from the capacitor and work them off.

Helps a lot if you preheat the board a bit with a hot air gun before trying to solder the new caps back on.


... anyhow, doesn't solve my situation here unfortunately.
