    Question on checking for shorts

Hi, I have a Toshiba L500 (compal model). The motherboard is dead and I have ordered a new one. However, I want to practice on this dead board and I thought I would start by checking for shorts. The question is, do I need to have the CPU and ram in the board when doing this?

Also, when checking voltages does the CPU and ram need to be in then too?

No they don't you can still measure all the voltages without them.

To measure the voltages you need the cpu installed in many mobo. Espacially amd ones. Also most of intel boards requires cpu. But if you are checking for shorts you dont need anything.
