Dell 1558 with graphics corruption - suspect it's terminal

I've got a client Dell Studio 1558 which has been dropped in the past and repaired, but now the screen is completely mangled up, won't even show on the LCD, but does on the external display.

I suspect the graphics ram has a fault.

    Anyone dealt with this before?

It won't boot properly either ( that's no problem, I'll get the data off via a Linux boot ).

Reflowed the two memory chips next to the GPU. Preheated with a normal heat gun, then used the hot-air machine at 380'C with lots of liquid flux for about 30 seconds on each of the two chips.

All came up good. Now a question of how long it'll last.

Hate to bring up an old thread, but did you get this to work on the primary display (not external)? I have the same laptop but it had a problem on boot, two beeps and white screen. I figured it was the northbridge/GPU after changing the RAM, so I did a reflow and now I get it to boot but only on an external display with bad picture

Does yours have dedicated GPU or integrated? If it's with dedicated, those new ATi chips always need reballing. The pads on the motherboards are very small and once separated, the solder balls will not stick back on.

It is a dedicated ATI chip. I guess I will send it in, thanks.
