    Ceramic capacitors in laptops.

    Hi guys,

I need to replace shorted capacitors 10uF 25V 1206 X5R in Sony Vaio Platform M851.
I just wondering which manufacture has got the best SMD caps:
    • AVX
    • JOHANSON DIELECTRICS
    • KEMET
    • MURATA
    • MULICOMP
    • TAIYO YUDEN
    • TDK
    • YAGEO (PHYCOMP)

Avx, Kemet, Murata, Yageo are all brand names.

Taiyo Yuden is also a good brand, but I know them more for their inductors, less about ceramic capacitors.
TDK is I guess good, but I had no experience with them. They do make lots of ceramic

Multicomp is Farnell's brand, they just buy from various suppliers and sell under their name. They could be from a good brand, or they could be from a less known Chinese manufacturer.

You should concentrate more on learning the differences between various ceramic standards, like X5R, X7R etc etc ... X7R should be better in theory than X5R but it's quite possible that in a 1206 package, X5R worked better for the guys that designed the laptop (due to vibrations, resonance etc etc)

Thank you very much for your informative post mariushm.
I will stick to X5R and will read more about various ceramic standards.

There aren't any known issues with any of those manufacturers, it is not the same situation as with electrolytic capacitors.
