Why does my laptop screen not turn on when I start the computer?

I have a Windows Vista HP Pavilion laptop that I bought last year. Whenever I turn it on, the screen doesnt turn on. All the lights on the board turn on, but the screen just stays blank, why does this happen? Thanks for the help!

many reasons! use vga out to another monitor/tv, ya get pic then? ann what model hp ? what gpu ? did it work then just stop! did it over heat~?

Hmm, this is common wit HP laptops - it is caused by a defective nvidia graphics chip.

what's your notebook brand and type,, maybe its bad bios or hardware issue ( VGA chip)

if its bios ,, just search by your brand and model at google with key " crisis recovery bios ....( your notebook brand n model )

VGA chip it is! Had many of these coming to my workshops. He'll need to reflow the nvidia/ati chip.

Hmm, this is common wit HP laptops - it is caused by a defective nvidia graphics chip.

I had one of these a couple of months ago... The fault is because there is not enough cooling on the graphics chip... It overheats and desolders itself from it's joints.

There was a class action against HP for certain Pavilion models, and recalls on some models because of battery overheating. How they are allowed to sell these things with such bad designs and then not have to stand over them is ridiculous. /rant

As was said above, a reflow or reball is how this is normally sorted out.. But given that this problem occurred with your laptop, I'm not sure how long you would get out of a reflow before it happens again... i.e. or how much money it is worth investing in fixing a problem that will probably recur in a few months.


PS... wouldnt do any harm to plug it in to an external monitor to ensure that it isnt just a problem with the backlight/inverter..
