    Damaged Motherboard Potential Repair?

    Hi everyone

I have taken on a task to fix my friends laptop. It was dropped and suffered some bad damage to the screen and I accepted the challenge as I said it shouldn't be hard to source a screen relatively cheaply and fit it for him, however after looking at it I am fairly sure the motherboard is also damaged.

It is an Acer 5742 and is showing some pretty weird symptoms. It turns on for about 3 seconds, fan spins, blue lights show (no flashing - just on) and then it turns off again, so I just assumed the motherboard was dead as this is usually a pretty big sign. But it does do different things, I have noticed if the charger is plugged in, it will repeatedly turn on an off until the charger is removed, as opposed to when the charger is not plugged in it will only come on the one time.

If the battery is taken out for about an hour and put back in and turned on, it will come on for much longer, maybe about 1-2 minutes, in which the CPU and chipset get significantly hot, but still does nothing - no sound - no flashing lights etc.

I inspected the motherboard and found one of the capacitors was slightly lifted up from the motherboard and it appeared that one of its legs was not in connection to the motherboard, so I took it off and soldered it with a couple of wires to the board, but it still didn't effect anything.

I have added some pictures of the motherboard and capacitor I reattached the board, this capacitor also has a slight dent which looks like it has been caused by part of the casing hitting it when it was dropped.

You got a short somewhere on the board. Strip it down to bare board and test again, this includes ram and cmos battery too.

If anything, it's probably a broken trace or traces on the board, if that's the case depending on the severity and how complicated the silkscreen is, like for example you may have multi-lanes and you may not have the skill to repair it. To repair, sever the damaged trace and place a jumper wire from point A component if there is one to point B component, if it's that simple, that is.

And get a new poly cap for that damaged one.

Someone should chime in with a recommendation.

Thank you for your reply, I have tried stripping it down to just the motherboard and still same thing. Is it definitely the symptoms of a short? That it stays on longer if it is unplugged for a while etc.

you got the same symptoms as my acer travelmate 5320
after breaking it down and testing as much as I could test, and finding nowt (about five times)
borrowed a cpu off a friend and swapped it, and it came straight on
in you case it would be strange for the cpu to be damaged after dropping
but it would be worth swapping with a known good one if you can get hold of one, just to eliminate,

Hmm.. I think I just destroyed the motherboard even more somehow. I am not really sure what happened, but I took the CPU out to see what would happen without it, as soon as I plugged the battery in all the lights started to flash really fast, and smoke started to come off the board.. my room now stinks of fried components lol. I am guessing it is no longer repairable.

Legion Y540 17irh motherboard issue ( need help to know how to diagnose my motherboard)
              by Docus
              Hi everyone 😀,

I'm here today to ask for help with repairing the motherboard of a Lenovo Legion Y540 17IRH.

To give you some context, I'm passionate about computer repair so much so that I've invested in a lot of tools and started practicing on dead and old hardware. I've been learning how to solder and desolder components, mostly focusing on phone repairs.

Recently, I bought a broken Lenovo Legion Y540 17IRH for just €150, and there are two main reasons why I made this purchase:
              1. I already own the exact same model, but its plastic chassis is badly damaged.

Lenovo T460 Only Charges on One Charger

              Laptop Question
              Hello,
I'm working on a Lenovo T460 that has been having trouble charging as of late. Its worked well since I've owned it for a few years. When I went to use it the other day it was dead and wouldn't turn on (was sitting on an Anker 65W GaN charger). After some fiddling with the charger I got it to turn on and start charging, but seemed like the charger was not working as it should (took a few plug and unplug cycles to get it to start charging).

A day later it was dead again and wouldn't boot/charge no matter what I did. No lights or anything when...

Guide to transplant MEC1503 EC chip and EEPROM reprogamming for T14s gen 2 and X13 gen 2
              by acedogblast
This is a guide that I am writing for helping others to replace their MEC1503 EC chip if it breaks (or to get around an inconvenient prompt to the BIOS). This forum has been extremely helpful to me so I would like to contribute to help others. I will tell you right now that this task is very difficult to do. You MUST have experience and tools to do precision micro-soldering, BGA reballing, trace repair, and general laptop repair skills.

There are some specialty tools needed to do this task. The replacement MEC1503 chips can be acquired from Aliexpress. Do not buy the bare chips as...

Asus ROG Strix Scar G533qm with a G733qm Motherboard, can I modify the Bios to accept G533 Bios
              by glovecaps
              Hello,

I have a Asus ROG Strix Scar 15 (G533QM) that had a dead motherboard (Graphics card dead) and after trying to fix the motherboard with no success, I bit the bullet on a sale for a new motherboard. I ordered a motherboard for the 15 inch model which is the one that I have, and when the motherboard arrived it wasn't for a little while that I saw it was from the 17 inch model.

My question is, can I update the Bios on this G733 motherboard to a G533 Bios.

The reason for wanting to do this is that the keyboard isn't working as it should, and I think this...

The ISL88739 & ISL88739AHRZ are a highly versatile combo battery charger
configurable for operating as either a Hybrid Power Boost (HPB)
charger or a Narrow VDC (NVDC) charger, supporting 2-, 3-, or
4-cell batteries. Both configurations allow the battery to work with
the adapter together to supply the system load when it exceeds
the adapter capability, referred to as system Turbo mode. HPB
charger configuration reverse-boosts battery energy to the system
bus to help the adapter provide the system power in Turbo mode.
