820-00165 blown USB_EXTB lines to CPU, can I re-route them?

Hi everyone,

I've an 820-00165 here, the LIO board was liquid damaged, burn mark inside the USB port, and the USB2 filter which handles the USB_EXTB_P/N data lines has exploded along with a diode, clearly PP5V_USB travelled down the data lines and went to the PCH.

USB_EXTB_P/N both have .018 diode mode to ground, which is not right, they should be more in the region of .400+ and their path is directly to the CPU on the logic board.

My question is, can I disconnect these lines at J9500 and route them elsewhere? into USB3 maybe? My knowledge here is limited and I'd rather not replace the CPU for such a small problem.

I'd appreciate any input, even a no not possible.

USB traces are impedance controlled. While a bit forgiving, best to use PCB traces over hard wired - the difference (no pun) will show when pushing high speed over USB.

Have you checked the ESD diodes on this connector? Remove them and test in diode mode again. Often they will be shorted after an ESD event.

Thanks for your reply, on the logic board side (where the lines are way too low) is where I'm testing the drop to ground (with the LIO disconnected), the USB signals come in from the LIO board connector J9500 straight to the CPU, so it can only be the CPU at fault. Unfortunately 5V made it past whatever protection there was on the LIO, I think maybe the diode fell off from corrosion, and was never there when 5V made it to the data lines.

I'm guessing it will be a CPU replacement then.
