820-3332 POSTS but has short damage 12V8 to 3V3

    Hi

I have an 820-3332 that chimes, has fan spin and has disk activity (see indicator light on external drive flashing) but nothing appears on either internal or external display.

U8900 already re-soldered twice with no improvement.

For the reasons below, I'm pretty sure the GPU and/or Graphics MUX is fried but since the board has signs of life, I would appreciate any guidance that can be offered before I throw the board into the parts bin.

First the bad news: There was one spot of corrosion that had connected 12V8 at C8925-1 (PPVIN_S5_HS_GPU_ISNS == PPVIN_S0_GFXIMVP) to an UNUSED 3V3 level GPU output signal (GPU_ROM_SCLK) via this path:

U8000-H4 to R8724-2 (no stuff) to R8715-1 (no stuff) to R8714-2.

Now, the really bad news. The short also connected 12V8 to 3V3 (PP3V3_GPU_VDD33 == PP3V3_S0GPU) via this branch from the above circuit:

    R8714-2 thru 24.9K to R8714-1 to C8721-1 (no stuff) to U8701-7, 8 (no stuff)

All the above traces were burnt out along with R8714 except for U8701-7 to U8701-8 and the 3V3 connection to R8714-1 pad.

All 3V3 users on both sides of the board are confirmed to still get 3V3 except I can't verify that U8000 (GPU) or U9100 (GPU MUX) are still getting 3V3 as the connections are hidden under those parts. Unfortunately, I do not have the equipment/skills to remove or replace those kind of parts.

For what it's worth, 3V3 is present at R8714-1 but not at C8721-1 or U8701-7 and 8.

Am I correct in assuming the GPU and/or Graphics MUX are fried and possibly other 3V3 users and this board should just be used for parts?

Again, would greatly appreciate any advice.

Interesting suggestion and it sounds promising but while the laptop seems to boot and access the drive, I can't get anything on the internal or external display. I've tried safe mode and recovery mode with internal and external displays and no luck. Without a display, how do I access terminal mode to use the PMSET command? Or do I need to remove and modify the EFI/BIOS to disable the discrete GPU?

uma conversion is only hardware mod by removing some component and solder some jumper wire.

conversion guide in this thread. (read whole thread expecially latest post)

Thanks for the info. Read through your thread, the RAR files and watched the video. I'm concerned the conversion might not work in this case since I can't get any video even if I try to start in Recovery or Safe mode where the processor defaults to the integrated GPU.

Macbook Pro (820-2773) 20 ohm partial short on the pp3v8 power rail after water damage
            by TheNuclearOption
water damage to the left speaker channel circuit caused an internal board short that has been carved out and damage to various capacitors. I removed both chips ur630 and ur600 both were burnt. Im not sure how to track down this partial short. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The fuse is blown on ppbus and im getting 12.24v to the ppvbatt side of the fuse

PS5 - long screw damage, via to ground layer short?
            by Prott
            Hello dear Badcappers,
I came across a PS5 that was longscrewed. The screw went through the HDMI IC (which I replaced + repaired the traces it damaged), however the screw also bend the board and slightly cracked it on the other side. It still seems like it could be fixable though as the area might not have lots of traces going through it (fingers crossed).

Can somebody, please, measure their board and tell me if my assumption of an inner short between the via and ground layer is correct? These 3 pads have almost no resistance. I would like to make sure those are not some data...

MacBook Pro 14" A2442 Short on PPBUS_AON but no short present when injecting voltage!
            by Stephen
I check PPBUS_AON and there is a short present on the line, the computer shows a short when testing for short to ground, so when I inject voltage into the line, I get 0AMPS so no short is showing up. I have replaced a blown cap on this board that exploded and tested for the short and it is now removed. Any suggestions? I tested voltage at the line when the fuses are connected and I am getting 1.2 Volts at the line.

            A2442 2021 14” coffee damage pPbus_aon short
            by AJ847.63e
            Hi all,

we've got a 2021 MacBook Pro 14 inch in with coffee damage. There was not really any corrosion luckily just a bit of sticky residue over the passives around the hdmi area. I cleaned all that up checked and there seem to be no shorts on the areas with the liquid residue. Caps aren't shorted, inductors seem fine and resistors measure how they should.

However there is a zero ohm short on ppbus_aon. 0.1v diode mode on pPbus measures at CR857.There is no further signs of liquid/damaged components on the board, and where there was liquid is no where near/ and is...

Acer Nitro 5 LA-L181p power LED turns on by 5 secs (Short on PCH rail?)
            by Victor Moreira Silva
            Hello everyone,

I'm trying to repair my old Acer Nitro 5 (AN517-54-55T5). I've already bought a new laptop, so this is more of a learning project. For the experience, with no high expectations of success.

Well, my decice specs are the following:

            Model: Acer Nitro 5 AN517-54-55T5
            CPU: Intel Core i5-11400H
            GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650
            Motherboard: GH51G LA-L181P Rev:1c

            The symptom:
When pressing the power button, the power LED lights up for about 5 seconds and then turns off. Initially, the issue was intermittent: sometimes...
