Asus RoG Strix GL553V - Keyboard Dead

    Good day,
it just so happen that I got my hands on a Asus RoG Strix (GL553VD ~2017),
in absolute mint condition. But with a "dead" keyboard.

I checked all the obvious stuff:
Condition of the connectors, there is absolute ne evidence of liquid damage or mechanical stress. As mentioned, absolute mint condition, as it was actually never used.

All keys have no function at all, and doesn't work in the UEFI.
    So I don't think it's an software/driver related issue.
I also set the UEFI to defaults to verify it's no software issue.

The only Key that works is the power button which is integrated in it, as well the power Led underneath.

But the touchpad is working but it has it's own ribbon cable probably internal USB.

So it's hard to believe that the keyboard is really broken, with noch evidence of external influence or even wear.

I've tried to measure the pins of the ribbon cable and see if I get any kind of reading by pressing an button.
Here I could get some changes in resistance linked to key presses.

Did you ever have "faulty" keyboard which was looking fine?
I've spotted close by an tinye ITE BGA IC (IT8176FN) which most probably the Keyboard controller, because according to the datasheet it features such.
But is has also a PWM controller and other functions in it I'm afraid I can't just replace it without flashing it.

Because I have a hard time to believe that the Keyboard is bad.
And a replacement top basecover with integrated keyboard is kinda expensive,
which is hard to justify just for testing.

Did anybody has some experiences he would like to share?
I've come across only partially failed keyboards or some with ghosting but not a completely dead one.

Any hint what I should look for or what I could check/verify?

    Cheers.

      Update:
I reflashed the BIOS to the latest release from 2019 (v3.08), but without any affect.

In contrast to the problem in linked thread my USB posrt work just fine.
So I will consult the Boardview/shematics and check the reading on the board and I'll try my luck at first with the IT8176 since its's just the keyboard and it's backlight isn't working.

Until now I haven't an proper programmer, just a cheap one which I just once used for an BIOS chip.
But I've my eye already on an SAS (Vertyanov).

But it's mentioned that the IT8176 will be auto programmed.

Mostly the SIO by asus board will be programmed by itself by the first startup it can takes 10min but do not interrupt it.

Re: Asus RoG Strix GL553V - Keyboard Dead

So I got two ICs from CN and finally I replaced them.
After the first boot it looks that it was auto-flashed.

So the good new the Keyboard is now reacting on keystrokes.
            Partial success.

The bad news are the key bindings are completly messed up.
e.g. Right arrow is the windows key, space bar is "T" etc.

Also the Keyboard Backlight is still not reacting.
(It shoul light up if the system starts)
And the Asus Software doesn't find it either.

I do still not believe that there is something with the keyboard.

Now I haveing the new ICs in suspicion and concern that those are counterfeit ones.

Because the package looks a bit different and also the markings are different.

            What do you guys think?
So the new one is laying on top of the original one (borfore I did the replacement)

Re: Asus RoG Strix GL553V - Keyboard Dead

I'm now thinking just to try the 2nd IC but, but on the other hand I from an logical point of view it doesn't make sense that the keyboard is now getting the keystrokes, but there are all over the place and that this is related to "something messed up" with the IC internally.

If it would be an counterfeit one It wouldn't be haveing be programmed...right?

I looked throught the boardview and the RGB Backlight for the keyboard have their own dedicated driver IC but this one looks to be controlled by the Same IT8176...

And the Touchpad is working because its tied to the SIO IT8587...

The only Keys that are working correctly all the time is the power button and it's Led.

Probably has wrong firmware in it.

ASUS ROG Strix G713QR - Keyboard, backlight and side LEDs don't work
                    by hollox123
Hello, I have an "ASUS ROG Strix G713QR" laptop, and for approx. 3 months I have the following problems:

                    1. Laptop keyboard doesn't work
                    2. The backlight on the laptop keyboard doesn't work
                    3. The x2 side LEDs (red) on the laptop don't work

The power button works, the touchpad works, and all the USB, HDMI, Ethernet, etc. ports work.

I already tried to reinstall all the drivers and reinstall Windows. So I don't know what to try anymore that is software-related.

But I am strongly aiming that it is somehow a BIOS-related problem,...

                    by macbook1967
I need help in troubleshooting an Asus STRIX GL703GE. This laptop has no working keyboard and keyboard lights. Device Manager does not show any keyboard at all (it shows a USB keyboard if connected, but not built in). The touchpad and ON/OFF button are ok. I checked keyboard circuitry on a motherboard, and everything seems to be good except there is no KBL_EN signal on pin #64 of IT8296E120A Keyboard Controller (U23, +3V_S5 is present). Pin #63 LED_PWR#_KB has 3.6V. Pin #1 on KCN1 KB CONN has 5.1V, pins #7-30 have 2.5V. G524 Power Distribution Switch (U24) is not shorted: pin #5 - 5v, pin #4 -...

                    ASUS ROG STRIX Z690-F DEAD
                    by beogeek
                    Hi Folks,

I have an ASUS ROG STRIX Z690-F that has a shorted and dead NUVOTON NTC6798D EC IC and a NUVOTON 3961AF, which appears to be the FAN driver for a chassis fan. I can source the EC and the fan driver, but my question is, will the EC need to be programmed or not? If so, does anyone have the dump for the EC IC and BIOS?

                    Cheers!...
