    Re: Asus GL703GM short

Got MATS working, there's a UEFI image out there which works great, just be aware you'll always get 32 or so errors on the VRAM test.

Found the chip I'd messed up and reflowed it again, back to my random little glitches and the card is once again working in windows.

Decided to look at the battery situation again. I notice the charge is going in cycles, 8v, 0v, 1v, 0v, repeat. Is that normal? The battery did also have a blown fuse, gave it a tiny blob of low melt solder, still won't charge. I even tried to jump start the process in case the charge was too low by feeding it the 8v directly to the cells. It held the charge but the computer still won't charge it and reports 0%.

I think the battery may be locked but I'm not too sure really. It's annoying as the wear is only 40% and I'm sure it only blew the fuse due to the short created bybthe original liquid spill. I'm not really keen to throw another 70 quid at this, any ideas?

Outside of gaming, it's still a solid laptop for work stuff and has lots of grunt and screen real estate. If the GPU is indeed just screwed I'm keen to use it as my work machine. Just need to figure out that battery issue.

Ok, so the battery is 15v yet this laptop is only putting out 8v on the battery connector, that's not right is it. What could I look at to see what's wrong here?

        Which charger IC is onboard?

Remove all power and check the resistance of each mosfet that is linked to the charger IC.

        Source & Drain
        Source & gate
        Gate & Drain

        Checking for low resistance readings.

          Its a BQ24780S.

None of the mosfets in the charging circuit are short to any other pins, all in the megs.

Coukd it be the IC? I did readings on the usual pins a few pages back and all seemed normal.

Pulled a fet from a parts board and fitted it, confirmed no more shorts, powered up and got 26v. A small, insignificant win as by this point, every time I load windows and the screen dims, it shuts off. The GPU I think is almost dead.

If anyone has any other thoughts I'm all ears but I don't think there's much hope for this laptop now. Unless I'm ok to run it in safe mode forever.
Yeah, i have the thought, you didn't mentioned the model of the defective Mosfet and the model of the replacement so far. Did you prove it is suitable?

              Re: Asus GL703GM short

It's the same model. Since that quote though, a lot has happened and the laptop now stays on until it's turned off. There's a GPU issue but that's for another day and doesn't affect general use.

The battery charging is making me a little crazy though.

The battery mosfets get 19v but put out 8v. It's just weird. What I need to know at this point is, should they be putting out 15v as this is what the battery is?

Well, it is either a fault in the charging circuit or a dead battery. But I think you should be aware of guess work lead to nowhere here. Experienced technicians teach to replace the battery first. Alternatively after a complete measurement of the charging controller (voltages and resistances) something might turn out or maybe not.

So I found the boardview for GL702 which looks to have a similar looking +NVVDD power generation circuit so I'm going to take a look today and try to narrow my short to a specific rail
How can i open the File? I got an error called "Invalid FZ key"

Use the BoardViewer software - it's within the archive along with the boardview file.
