    PS5 disk drive not working

    Hello,

I am trying to diagnose a PS5’s disk drive that is not working. At first, I found a shorted capacitor. However, after removing it, I cannot find any other short but it still is non working. I measured the voltage at this place (see photo) but there’s only 12.11v at one pin. Other pins all show varying voltage between 0 and 50mV. (Constantly changing)

    Any idea?

Is it possible that the component (the one with 5 pins) is bad? If so, anyone can identify it? It says A8-P1P on top of it.

Thank you. Based on the data sheet you provided, it implies that there's 12v on the EN pin only. This seems strange. Also, the ground doesn't seem to be at the same place on the board vs the data sheet. I'll have to investigate further

edit: ground is at the right place

Remove the chip and look where the 4 pin (VIN) goes.

Yes, and the input voltage exceeds (your input is 12V), but it looks like it’s not.

Rather, your pinout, look here, maybe you will find yours, look for the markings (A8-xxx) and the body.
                Or do you have (A8=xxx)?

are you actually getting 5v and 12v going in?

Check diode readings on this component, and come back to us. I will check a working one

It does look like A8=XXX, hard to tell

I am only getting the 12V

                      Here are the diode readings.

So where are these 12v?, which are supplied if there is no power supplied to the input, and accordingly there will be nothing at the output.
                        Is there some tension here?

The tension at the point you mention is 12.09v

Sorry for the double post, but I’d like to add that the shorted component that I removed was there (see photo). Could it be the reason it is not working? I thought it was only a capacitor and that it could work without replacing it. Can anyone confirm the component that was in this location?

It’s not clear, if at this point you have 12.09v, then why on 1 pin. you have 0.668v when it should be 12v?

Diode reading looks good compared to mine. The component you're missing is indeed a capacitor, and shouldn't be necessary for testing

Because this is a diode mode measurement, and not voltage measurement

Thank you for confirming. Could it be that the MAIN motherboard should be supplying another voltage, other than the 12v? I checked everywhere else on the disk drive board and all I can find is the same 12v at its source

In order for voltage to appear at the output (pin 6) of this LDO, the controller must send a command (voltage) to turn it on, this is to the 3-pin EN (turn on).

I thought I'd throw out some of my personal experiences in the last 12 months with Intel iMacs, 2.5" SATA SSD drives and Fusion drive data recoveries.

As a backgrounder, Apple never fitted a 2.5" SSD's to these iMacs. Apple's SSD option was a system of 32GB NVMe blade drive (NGFF connector) and Seagate 1TB 2.5" HDD, married together in software to become a Fusion drive. Non Fusion systems have just the 1TB Seagate HDD.

So, the most common reason an iMac comes across my bench is because it's either ridiculously slow, or it fails to boot at all. The most...

                                          Hi,

I have an really very weired issue with ASUS ROG STRIX B550-I GAMING.

Some NVME (PCIe) SSD's are not working correctly in the second M.2 socket. An example of it is the SAMSUNG SSD980 1TB NVME SSD.
Some other NVME (I have only smaller ones) disk do work without any problem, also SAMSUNG disks, eg an MZVPV128HDGM-0000.

The behaviour is also really very strange, i.e.:
                                          • The disk shows always up in BIOS - so it is recognized, so far so good
                                          • POST-ing with this disk with fresh Windows 24H2 installation (done in the M.2_1 socket) in the M.2_2 socket
                                          ...

Pin 8 (ZERO_ODD_DP#) in the image below is 0v both optical drive connected and not. R553 (image 2) is 0v on optical drive side and 3.3v on the PCH side, both with optical drive connected and not. I tried to replace DVD drive and DVD drive connector with no results, so i suppose it's a problem on the motherboard. Can you please help me to understand more?...
