    Replacing Capacitors in Sega (and other) Consoles

    Hello

    I have been on a bit of a re-capp'ing adventure of late.

    I have replaced the capacitors in

    Sega Mega Drive model 1 VA6
    Sega Mega CD model 1 (x2)
    Sega 32X (x2)
    Sega Genesis 2 VA2.3

    I now have the case of the guilts as I have used cheap capacitors (JackCon etc).

    While they work fine (the SMD caps in the Sega/Mega CD model 1's had leaked) I would like to re-visit these and replace with decent capacitors, I am thinking Rubycon or Panasonic. Also thinking of getting from Element14 vs eBay as

    1/They SHOULD be genuine and

    2/The price difference is about the same

    3/No waiting 3-4 weeks for the capacitors.

    Now my question extends to which series of capacitor should I use?

    For example we have for Panasonic series AM (13cents each) up to GA (82cents each).

    I am thinking of getting the middle cost option say AD, FC or M series.

    Is this the right train of thought? Anything has got to be better than what I foolishly put in there. I should have known better as I worked as an Electrical Fitter for nigh on 10 years building circuit boards. Not in designing and spec'ing hence the questions.

      Of the 5 Panasonic series you listed, the only one that seems to be a low impedance, long life series is FC. FC is a very good, low impedance, durable, series. If Element14 is a reputable distributor, use them and avoid eBay, which folks here regard as a "reliable" source of fake and counterfeit parts. Also, look into Badcaps owner Topcat's terms for shipping to Oz. He has genuine parts.

          I don't think those need low impedance caps. Panasonic M series or Nichicon VR series will work. If they use a switching power supply, using Panasonic FC series for filtering might be good.

              Pretty much concur. FC (like Nichicon PW or UCC/NCC LXZ) is low impedance, but not extremely so. OTOH, it's also a long life series (ala PW and LXZ; some of the others omp cited are 1000 and 2000 hour series), which may be a very useful characteristic.

                  I have to redo one of my capacitor lists as I misplaced the original! D'oh!

                      The further I look into this, the more options I have, for Panasonic I have

                      KS
                      KA
                      NHG
                      FC
                      M
                      AM
                      GA


                      etc....

                      I think I will as advised stick with either M or FC.

                          Greetings folks. I darn near blew the heck out of my 12V inverter the other day by connecting it to a 24V battery source. :poof . Well lesson learned...... or maybe not . But in the meantime I have 4 Capacitors that need immediate replacing each rated at 16V 3300uf and 105deg. I saw a break down review You Tube video where the host suggested that the 35V Capacitors were a better choice for manufacturers to use. Another video suggested that replacing capacitors of higher Voltage is fine but that the 3300uf rating should be kept the same. Can someone please clarify what the functional benefits...

                          I have this old (2004?) Altec Lansing ATP3 and i would like to replace the capacitors. I have identified 34 out of the 36 of them as Samxon GR of various capacities and voltages.

                          I can't find datasheets for the Samxon in any of the following variants:

                          10000uF 25 v - this one i really want to replace because i suspect it is what causes a dull hum regardless of the volume knob position or if the source is plugged in. I am eyeballing the Rubycon 25PK10000MEFCGC18X35.5 for this purpose. So if i pay a 10x the price part for shipping i might as well go ahead and...

                          Vizio M60-C3 Replacing 1000uF 16V with 1000uF 35V capacitors?

                          Hi, my Vizio M60-C3 does not power on. No lights whatsoever. Upon opening up the TV, the power supply board has 4 bulging capacitors. Each is 1000uF 16V. I have read that one can use capacitors of the same uF and higher voltage rating, but is 1000uF 35V capacitor too high of a voltage rating? My local shop only has these higher voltage capacitors so would rather just buy the 35V variety if it is OK to use them.

                          Any thoughts if OK to use these higher voltage capacitors?

                          I have Sega Saturn and 5 years ago, I recapped all of capacitor in the Power supply, Because At that time, It frequently freezed black screen after SEGA logo displayed.

                          It hardly ever freezed after I finished to recap all of caps in the power supply.

                          But Yesterday, It did not show any screen at all and its green power LED constantly blinked.

                          To my surprise I found that all of two NXH 10v 2200uf capacitors in the secondary area of Power supply have been bulged and It measured 57 mF and 75 mF capacitance.

                          It seems that quality...
