this is nothing new and very common.
i stopped by a neighbors place and picked up his dead vhf spectra that he uses for 2m fm.of course its the leaky sm caps of death.
you know the saying "when it rains it pours"?
well i got a call from another ham with a dozen spectra's that are sick.
he got them at hamvention and now finds out why they are cheap.not one will respond to the rss.
so he donated the pile to me in exchange for a rebuilt vhf and uhf unit.
got heads,cables,everything.
2m/70cm on the cheap!
(pulls out reels of sm tantalums and switches on soldering station)

That is slick.
Been fixing old Midland XTR PL boards because of the sucky mini e lytic's in them. Got a photo article on the subject if you want to see it. Same deal with Icom TT microphones.
