Can an iMac chime if the logic board is bad?

    Hi all.

A friend has a 2011 iMac which chimes (and apparently plays music) but was told by a technician that the logic board needs replacing.

The screen stays black, but music apparently plays when the keyboard 'play' button is selected.
    A bit beyond my experience...??!!??

I was under the impression that bad logic boards don't give the Apple chime.

Anyway, they are bringing it over tomorrow where I'll check the diagnostic LED's to get a better idea. Seems more like a PSU, GPU or inverter problem to me.

A bad logic board should just have one LED no?

I would love to hear your thoughts

Re: Can an iMac chime if the logic board is bad?

Surely if an iMac performs the startup chimes, then the logic board is receiving power and has performed the necessary basic function tests?

That would give 'two' diagnostic LED's. My experience is limited but I have never know a 'bad' logic board to play the chimes.

Three LED's would indicate that the GPU is also communicating fine.

No-one out there has any experience with this?

The chime means the board has completed POST and booted. So likely a display related issue. Graphics card failures are pretty common on these pre-2012 iMac's so check status LED's. Also pretty sure these displays are also fluro backlight rather than LED...can be bad cables or failed inverter but my money is on the graphics card.

They are such a hassle to work on, and given it's age very few $$$ to be made on spending a lot of time on.

        Hi Reformatt

I would agree that it is most likely a GPU or even didplay issue.

In the end I didn't get to see the iMac but thanks for the input

Vizio e601i-A3 - Has Sound and Display, But No Backlight - Bad Power Supply Board or Bad LED Bulbs ?
          by Tynan Dill
I was given this TV from my great uncle. He said it just wouldn't turn on one day out of nowhere, replaced the TV, and gave it to me to possibly fix and use for myself.

Upon bringing it home and plugging it up, it showed a standby light.

I powered it on and without a flashlight, the display showed the "V" but the lighting is very dim, but visible.

The screen seems to blackout and stay black, but with a flashlight I can see the display.

With my Playstation 4 connected via HDMI, and running a game I can hear sound.

          Assuming...

Hi, this is my personal laptop, which the original board (lets call it Board A) blew up PU8700 (TPS51486), making a hole on the board, i had left the laptop at my desk one day with the battery fully charged and didn't touch it for a week, but when i tried to turn it on it didn't
Thought the battery was dead, so i plugged in the charger then tried to power on, the power LED blinked once, charged LED still orange, unplugged the charger, plugged in again and I noticed the "magic smoke" smell, so i unplugged the charger, removed the back cover and saw the blown IC (the "magic...

Upgrading a Samsung ue55nu7096u with logic board from an ue55ru7105k -- good idea?
          by ohren
I hope this is the right forum to post in despite not technically being a repair, but still a question of swapping boards.

I thought I'd explore the possibility to upgrade an existing working Samsung ue55nu7096u with the logic board (and power board if needed) of a newer model (ue55ru7105k) of the same size and appearance (and resolution). The reason being I'd like the extra inputs of that board including component in, an extra HDMI port and bluetooth. Its panel is broken so I have no use for the board otherwise.

The models launched in 2018 and 2019 respectively....

LG 60PK550 Logic Control Board EBR63450301
          by Yanleb
Hi all, I just want to share the repair of my 60PK550-UA TV set.

The TV set was powering on, just no image. After verification, nothing wrong on the YSus or ZSus boards. Nothing wrong on the main board either.

But I noticed that the LED was not flashing on the Logic Control Board. This is an EBR63450301. The LED is supposed to flash even with all the flat cables disconnected, with only the power cable attached.

All the voltages measured at the electrolytic capacitors on the board were good. From top left to bottom right:
          C57: 3.30V
          C61:...

Will I have a bricked logic board after reflow of the GPU v-core U8900 chip on my Mid-2012 15" Retina Macbook pro?
          by korben_dallas
Hi everyone! I'm trying to fix my black screen / failed U8900 GPU v-core on my Mid-2012 Macbook Pro 15" Retinaby doing a rework/reflow of the chip (once I determine that's the real issue; but it likely is).

I've been disabling the GPU in NVRAM for a few years... but it's just time for a better solution.

I'm new to soldering but the only feasible way to fix this issue is to do something myself.

          MY QUESTION:
I've been seeing some people (on this forum mostly) run into issues with the logic board needing a serial number or it being deactivated (?)...
