    R9 280x - only runs at x8

Hi, having some problems with an R9 280x, sometimes it will work fine, other times it will crash, but is always only detected at PCIEx8.

Only thing I can fine is one of the PCIE lanes measures 2.2v in diode mode, all the others are 0.6v, all of the 220nf caps are ok and this side measure fine in diode mode too.

Do we think its worth trying to reball/reflow or its more likely a faulty GPU core?

    Thanks

Hi, I doubt that you even use all the bandwith of x8 as this is not a very new card, so I would recommend to do nothing. To go sure make some fps benchmarks and compare to results published in the internet to check if x8 slowens the card. Reballing is always connected with some risk to GPU and board. Card and GPU schould be professionally "baked" 24h before doing this (in order to get rid of the humidity in the board and GPU case, not doing this may result in demage GPU/Board, and I mean not the cooking of the card in an oven, which is the worst what you could do). Also some low quality / older boards can distort themselves during heating and even more contacts can be lost. Doing a reflow with a quite active solder paste would be my first recommendation. However if the card is not stable, reflow/reballing may be the only options, as if the problem is in the GPU not much can be done. Probably you have this correct, but go sure you have the card in the first from CPU x16 slot, usually the second full PCIe slot is x8.

also if the card is idling it would downclock to lower pci ex spec and use lower lanes make sure you stress test it and then check for how many lanes it runs at

Thanks for the pointers, I think I will have to try reflow the chip - card doesn't work at all now - no display and error 43

Not bothered about the x8 issue, just thinking it maybe an indication of a solder ball problem.

Remember to "bake" i.e. preheat the card for some hours (at least 12h) over a preheater at ca 120-140 C, to get rid of the humidity in the board and GPU. Monitor the board temperature during reflow, so that it does not go over 280 C. You can also try to bend the card with caution, and see if the picture comes back, if yes this is an solid indication for a contact issue, if no picture this gives no information.

In preparation to whip the gpu off, I oven baked the board today @ 100°C interestingly the pcie lane that measured 2.2v (and I checked, it still did this morning) now measures correct at 0.6v

KDL-60EX500. Comes on fine, sound is fine, backlights come on. Blank screen. Already tried reset POWER/VOL-. Anyone else have this problem? Possibly bad T-Con RUNTK4244ZZ or panel? Could main or power supply cause this? There were 2 blown 560u 35v on power going to backlights but they were still working fine. Thanks for your help.

Dell ATX PSU won’t start, but forcing it works fine?
              by CapLeaker
Got a case of something new weird at work. There is an old 2nd gen Intel i3 in an old “Pizza box” shell that has a small form factor power supply. Unfortunately I forgot to take pictures and model number off it.

Anyway, I get to work and get to look at this computer. Standby LED on the PSU is on, but the computer won't start. Hmm o.k. take the battery out of the main board try again, nothing. O.k. then… unplug the power supply from the main board and put in a full size ATX PSU (yeeeesss! Exact that blown Powerman IP that I fixed a while back), plug it in and the old...

Gigabyte RX 570 black screen during driver installation but runs fine after hardreset
              by aysat
              Hey guys,

This is weird because i have 2 gigabyte rx 570 gaming and they behave the same. i am connecting it to an lg tv 4K with hdmi. I already disabled onboardgpu in bios. I also observed when i disable gpu under devices , it hangs on black screen. same during installation of drivers. what do you think causing this problem?

RTX3090 working fine but fans not spinning
              by emil_t
Hello guys. I have a problem with a PNY XLR8 GAMING RTX3090 graphics card. The problem is that it displays and works fine, but the fans don't spin at all. The problem occurred when someone else removed the fans in order to clean it and broke one of the fan connectors. He replaced it himself and after that, it wasn't working anymore. I guess he damaged something else in the process. What i have done so far: I found 2 capacitors next to the connector that were in a bad shape, he must have touched them with his tools - they weren't shorted, but i replaced them with similar ones from a similar card....

I have this TV set that I spent a long time fixing it.
I finally found a shorted SMD capacitor near the plug from the PS at the main board. It was shorting one of the main voltages (can't remember which one)
I removed that capacitor, and as it has another one in parallel, I left it with only one, checked it and it seemed to work fine. The solder near that capacitor was really delicate as I pulled apart one trace so I prefered to not mess much with it after I had to air solder one small thread of copper

I didn't use that TV much at that time. Now that I'm using it,...
