    Recapping a VP6

    I just got my VP6 cap kit, and I'm a bit confused. I can identify the 23 caps that need to be replaced:

    15-6.3v 1500uf
    4-skinny 16v 1000uf
    4-short fat 16v 1000uf

    I got in my kit:

    8-6.3v 2200uf
    6-6.3v 1500uf
    5-short fat 16v 1000uf
    2-skinny 16v 1000uf
    2-short skinny 6.3v 1000uf

    I know my description is lacking, but my soldering experience is with wiring and terminals. Usually I have schematics and blueprints, so I'm not familiar with what might be compatible with my VP6. Is my kit a bit off, or will these caps improve performance? If they are a better fit, how do I know which caps to replace with what?

    8-6.3v 2200uf - Go in the 8 cap "L" shape next to CPU socket 1

    6-6.3v 1500uf - Replaces the various 1500uF scattered throughout the board (should have been 7)

    5-short fat 16v 1000uf - Replace the 1000uF 16v caps behidn the parallel port (should have only been 4)

    2-skinny 16v 1000uf - Replace the 2 in front of the AGP

    2-short skinny 6.3v 1000uf 1 goes between the AGP and PCI1. the other, by the northbridge chip.

    Check your count again, it appears you are missing one of the 1500uF 6.3v 10mm, and have one too many of the 1000uF 16v 10mm. Check them again and make sure you didn't confuse one of them. Did you buy the kit from me? If so, and the count is indeed off, email me asap so I can correct it. The 2200uF caps in place of 1500uF caps in the big "L" has been known to improve performance.

      Yeah, I did order it from you, but I think I made a mistake in my counting. One of the 6.3v 1500uf is short and gold, while the others are long and white (silver?) It looked exactly like the 16v 1000uf caps, but just a bit smaller. Is size a factor in usability/longevity for this application? It's half the size.

      Another question, you mentioned

      On my board they are 16v 1000uf....can I install the 6.3v without a problem?

        Yes, they will be fine. The only place that the 16v ones are critical are the 2 in front of the AGP slot, as there's 12v on those (AGP power filters).

          4x 1000uF 16V change at nominal strongly (1000)
          otherwise you risk cpu crystal crackles

              But what about the tiberium???

              But seriously, you can also spin the processor bearings if you do that too, and those are a pain to replace.

                I have a friend whom I've sold my from-china-guy-at-ebay-store caps and I must say they are real and true, performing as expected - Rubycon MBZ 6.3v 3300uF and 16v 1800uF for those two near the AGP slot - already I have described how much 2200uF at the VRMs to CPU improved the OC capability of the board, but these 3300 & 1800 together almost reached the very peak! I have (2200uF caps) 166MHz FSB and 83MHz AGP stable, and this friend of mine has (3300uF caps) a stable (!) 173-4MHz FSB and 86MHz AGP (rarely the screen blips, but that's acceptable), which I cannot reach. He can post at the maximum 178 and can get to Windows, but the VGA's doing some weird stuff and so, rectangles & triangles all over and eventually it blanks black, this happening all the time within +/-2min after the power button pressed...so the VGA card seems to be a limit, just FYI, need to update my thread for further info. Conclusion: I knew higher capacitance would bring fruit, even if it was a small slice... Now I have to force my VGA card to go higher somehow...

                P.S.: ISanyok, please explain to us...

                  forgot something - also placed one 1800uF under the AGP slot and one almost in the middle of the PCB. I wonder if these can be replaced for those 6.3v ones, because kc8adu stated that only the two edge ones must be 16v.
