    Abit Ag-8

    Hello...

One of my older builds came in for repairs and upgrade.... a mighty ABIT AG-8 with a Pentium4 630!

The TruePower 2.0 PSU Fuhjyyus were hatching and causing stability trouble, and the board itself was getting flakey. Fortunately, the owner wanted Core2Duo, so in went a nice new Seasonic PSU, new board, memory CPU and they left happy.

And I got to keep the old parts!
The Antec is now full of Nichicon and UCC with a new faster fan (still silent).... but the AG-8 is another story.

The board works great for about 5 hours and then... Crash! Even the BIOS goes to defaults as if the battery were dead. (yes, I replaced the battery!) This happens with any PSU being used, including a nice new EA380.

The AG-8 was one of ABITS first "All Japanese Capacitor" boards, and this one is full of Rubycon YXG, Nichicon ZL and UCC KZG all in apparent good condition (from the outside).

In particular, the CPU is guarded by a forest of 2200uf/6.3v KZG that all appear fine but probably got fairly warm for awhile.

Isn't the KZG one of the "doesn't like Heat" caps?

Should I just order up a batch of Nichicon or Rubycon? Or would polymers be a better choice in this area?

Happy for a great experimentable board,
    Keri

    Yes,
KZG is one of the "doesn't like Heat" caps.
KZG are directly comparable to MBZ for specs.

I haven't seen them 'go' that way though.
It would be interesting if that turns out to be the problem.
Maybe only a few have gone south at this point.

Capacitor Diarrhea - Nichicon PL Series
      by DrewPhillips
Hello All, I have on the bench a couple of PSU's which have some failed Nichicon PL series caps. They didn't "puke" their guts through the top, but instead "diarrhea'ed" corrosive brown electrolyte through the bottom, down the legs and onto the board. On one cap, the electrolyte rotted the cap right off the board leaving 2 little stubs, and also corroded a trace on the foil side.

The PSU's are Power-One MAP series and are ringing-choke topology. The semiconductors have date codes in 1993. The PSU's were used in a commercial application, fan-cooled. They had failed...

      Mid/late 80's Nichicon Yellow Caps
      by nick3092
I recently acquired a set of Bose Roomate speakers from the mid to late 80's. Basically the right speaker cabinet is completely passive, and the left one has the power transformer and amplifier circuit in it. Out of curiosity, I opened it up to see what the circuit looked like. Looks like they used all Nichicon VX (2x 4700uF/16v for smoothing off the bridge rectifier), a couple random Nichicon SE series sprinkled on the board, and what really caught my eye - 2 yellow sleeved Nichicon caps (both 1uF/50v with no real series marking. Below are pictures of the caps. The only thing not shown in these...

Looking for someone to recap Dell XPS T450 motherboard (Live in suburbs outside of Philly)
      by varunviolin007
      Hi guys,

I’m looking for someone in the Northeast to do a full electrolytic capacitor recap on a working Dell Dimension XPS T450 motherboard (it's an Intel 440BX, Slot 1). The board runs mostly fine but is beginning to freeze after warm reboots (turns back on for 30 secs or so and then freezes up but is perfectly fine after 12 hr cool down).

I’d be sending just the bare motherboard (CPU, cards, bracket, battery all removed). I’m located in Chadds Ford, PA and happy to ship within the US.

Looking for someone experienced with older PC boards who uses...

Looking for best replacements for Capxons, but can't find data sheets
      by withalligators
Recapping the power supply board for a Samsung 305T monitor, everything is Capxon except 2 Rubycons. I can't find data sheets matching these online, so don't know what ripple numbers, impedence, etc, to look for. There are a few different looking GL series data sheet PDFs, but the listing that matches the capacitance and voltage is a much bigger case size. I've narrowed down selections with lead spacing and case diameter, and what's in stock at Digi-key

1 x Capxon 1000uf35v GL C720(is this a part number or batch number, can't find it anywhere) 105c

      1 x Capxon 1000uf35v...
