    MSI 845PE Max-L

I have a MSI P4 845PE Max that is the basis of a security surveillance system that is suffering from reboots. I found the culprit to be two failed Teapo 6.3v 1000uf caps located near the AGP slot, see below. The system was adequately cooled (loud) and dust was not a factor due to a filter on the intake. The caps around the CPU are UCC and Panasonic and look fine.

    Full shot of board
    Failed Teapos
    Lower half of board

As you can see from the images there are several of the Teapos spread about the board (mostly on the lower half) all of them of the same type 6.3v, 1000uf (17 in total), and the rest of them look fine. At minimum I was thinking I should pull the caps around the AGP and RAM slots. Are there any I can leave or should they all be pulled and replaced?

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Leave the UCC and Panasonic caps alone, they are okay. Replace all the TEAPO 1000uf 6.3V caps, if two of them fail then the others may fail in a short time period.

I recommend ordering these caps from Digikey to replace the failed 1000uf 6.3V TEAPO caps on your motherboard: http://search.digikey.com/scripts/Dk...me=565-1878-ND

      Re: MSI 845PE Max-L

In case anyone was curious this story did have a happy ending...

I ended going with Rubycons from Topcat, enough for every Teapo on the board. I suppose I could have saved a bit and went with something from Digikey but this being part of a security system that could be in service for quite awhile I figured the Rubycons were justified.

The recap went fine aside from the one cap by the PS2 ports being a 400uf 16v cap. You couldn't read the value due to how it was positioned so luckily I noticed after it was pulled. That cap went back in but I'm sure it will be fine given its role and low value. The rest of the caps were all UCC or Panasonic and those stayed in place.

Unfortunately it seems the video card was damaged due to the failed Teapos. The post screen was garbled (see pic below) and windows would crash after a few mins at the desktop.

Once the video card was replaced the system was rock solid. Two passes with Memtest 86 and 24 hours of Orthos = happy ending.

        Re: MSI 845PE Max-L

I have a similar motherboard, it's instead the MSI 845E Max.

Last year, I gotten a used Radeon 9800 Pro and the video suddenly gotten corrupted when all I was doing was running a HDD wiping utility.

But it would sometimes clear up if I reseated the video card, only to come back again.
Now, that don't sound like bad caps, more like a messed up video card.

Even the BIOS screen gotten corrupted with the Radeon 9800 Pro.

Was suspecting a hairline crack somewhere on the Radeon 9800 Pro.

It was always fine when I had a GeForce 4 Ti 4200 in there!

And when I put the GeForce 4 Ti 4200 back in there, it was fine.

Even in a non dusty environment, all it takes is one piece of hair in the slot to do crazy stuff.
Could be compressed air would help.

HannStar Hanns-G HC194d LCD monitor repair
            by momaka
Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

Seasonic B12 BC-550 – barely 2 years old and with BAD CAPS already!
            by momaka
I know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.

For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:

            Heathkit IO-4205 Power Supply Caps
            by eryjus
            Hello,

First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."

Identifying caps on an old Zoom 9000
            by Paxman_Swede
            Hello!

I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.

The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.

I have studied the board and...

Help with switching power supply caps
            by captain150
I'm trying to repair two old VCRs, they both have bad caps. One has leaky ones, the other would barely run until I subbed in some caps from another power supply I had laying around (though they are the wrong values). This vcr works for an hour or two, but then the power supply starts whining and the picture gets lines in it. I didn't replace all the secondary caps, so another voltage might still be problematic, or the values I used are too far off.
I've been on mouser and digikey but the options are a bit overwhelming. I just need some new ones that will work. They don't need to be top quality,...
