    Intel D865PERL - no Vcore after replacing MOSFETs and MOSFET drivers

    Hi,

    Finally got time to fix this board up.
    At first it didn't give any POST codes. Turns out it was an unsupported Celeron D cpu. After dropping in an Celery 2.6gHz the CPU came out of reset with clock signal, but still no post codes. For a while it did work when I applied pressure to the ADP3168 chip, but on next reboot the MOSFETs started to burn. Then I left it as is for months.

    Now I came back prepared. Replaced the bad MOSFETs and the ADPxx18k drivers. Now I don't get any MOSFETs blowing up issues anymore. But sadly, the Vcore is missing. The whole VRM isn't switching. CPU is stone cold (tested in another machine, works) and stuck in reset... I do have an ADP3166 to replace the ADP3168, but pin 6 on both are different. On 3166 it's CROWBAR which can short 12v to GND on demand, while on 3168 it is VID5. Not sure if I can use the 3166 here....

    Drivers get their 2.8v on pin 3, original ADP3168 also has 1.2v on pin 11, so there shouldn't be any problems here. I see the high side MOSFETs getting 12v on their gates, but nothing on the outputs, low side get their 12v on source, but nothing on drain.....

    Any ideas?

    After some troubleshooting I found the culprits, missing FB, FBRTN, PWRGD which makes the VRM not switch (no PWD 1-4 voltage). FB and FBRTN are all connected to their respective rails. Injecting FB makes PWRGD still stay low....
    Injecting Vcore directly onto the coils makes the CPU get out of reset, but it's still not posting...
    All I know is that the ADP3168 sees some unknown fault and halts the switching of the VRM and that's it.
    Any ideas?

      It's very common for one capacitor to fail on this board. Often it's nichicon HM(M) 2200µF 10V, between RAM and SATA ports. It causes intermittent POST.

        Well, it might've been the case earlier on, now this board is total e-waste....
        Not only did I order the wrong chip (ADP3166), I also destroyed pin 11 (EN) on the original chip and the pads bellow them onboard......
        Sure, trace repair is possible, but is it really worth putting in another 50zł just to not have a guarantee if it's not gonna work?

          This board had the initial fault in VRM with high side Mosfet from PWM1 (phase 1) getting very hot. It also had the VRM caps quicly heating up in 10-15 seconds after power on.

          This board uses mext ICs and Mosfets in VRM:
          - ADP3180 PWM controller - in 3 phase mode
          - ADP3418 as Modfet drivers
          - High side Mosfets STD38NH02L (from ST)
          - Low side Mosfets STD90NH02L

          Some of the symptoms were very similar with the "Dead Asus P5P800-VM" in this forum.
          I had the sawtooth voltage on Vcore too this was probably the cause of the Vcore caps...

          I tried to use this method:

          Testing an N-channel MOSFET:

          Step 1: Discharge the Gate (turn off the MOSFET)
          Place the black probe (COM) on the Source (S) and the red probe on the Drain (D). The multimeter should show no continuity (high resistance or "OL" – open line).
          Then, touch the black probe to the Source (S) and the red probe to the Gate (G). This discharges any stored charge in the Gate, turning the MOSFET off.

          Step 2: Charge the Gate (turn on the MOSFET)
          Now, place the red probe on the Gate (G) and the black probe on the

          My laptop went dead and after checking ,the main 19 volt power rail was shorted. After some checks i could identify that a high side vcore mosfet was shorted.
          I replaced the mosfet and now the white powerled is present , fans start spinning but capslock shows the famous 5 long and 3 short code.

          I checked the vcore voltages after replacement and i get for all 1.01 V so means for me that the driver is still working of the replaced shorted mosfet. On the Nvidia i measure around 0.8 V after the mosfets.
          I did voltage injection on the cpu with 0.7V and i have a current...

          Hey guys,

          i have a asus motherboard here and as the title says after the first mosfet (in the picture) there is nothing more than 3.15v.
          I injected 19v and max. 1 amp at the charging port and there is not voltage drop or smth. It's just taking 19v and 1 milliamp.
          Then i tried to inject 19v and max 1amp after the current sensor and there it first takes 19v and 4 milliamps and after 2 seconds it is taking nothing (no current).
          I measured on the coils on board everything seems fine. Also the main power rail is not shorted (infinite resistance).
          Now i thought something...

          The board number is GU502DU. I repaired this a couple weeks ago and it came back with the same issue, same mosfet failed (PQH9201). I'm hoping that the GPU was spared this time.
          I used the same replacement part (purchased from Mouser) and I'm certain the soldering was done properly since it took just as much effort to remove as before. What could cause this same mosfet to fail? I'm thinking if it was unsuitable then the others would fail too. I looked for similar failures on YTube and the mosfet was replaced with AOE6930 in one instance and AOE6932 in the other but it's possible that the...
