VRM shorted, low side shorted ?

    Hello,

my motherboard, a Gigabyte b660m-DS3H, broke last night, and I'm trying to fix it.
    The symptoms are as follows:
    - The PC doesn't boot when the CPU power supply is connected (without CPU).
    - When voltage is applied to the CPU connection, the three phase 2 MOSFETs start to heat up. The other MOSFETs do not heat up.

The phases are made up of one high-side and two low-side MOSFETs.
My hypothesis is that if the two Low MOSFETs are hot, they must be permanently ON, even when the High is ON, causing a short-circuit.

Do you know how I can test the driver? Do you have any advice for a case like mine?

Test each mosfet. Remove all power. Meter in resistance mode.

    Measure the resistance across:

    source (1-2-3) & drain (5-6-7-8)
    source (1-2-3) & gate (4)
    gate (4) & drain (5-6-7-8)

Post each measurement. A low resistance often means the mosfet is defective.

      Thank you for your answer

      Values are formatted like this : Mosfet number : [Source->Drain resistance] ; [Source->Gate resistance] ; [Gate->Drain resistance]

      Phase 1:
      1 : [0];[2.9];[2.9]
      2 : [226];[209];[26]
      3 : [225];[210];[27.5]

      Phase 2:
      1 : [0];[6.7k];[6.7k]
      2 : [220];[OL];[OL]
      3 : [220];[OL];[OL]

      Phase 3:
      1 : [0];[6.7k];[6.7k]
      2 : [220];[OL];[OL]
      3 : [220];[OL];[OL]

      Phase 4:
      1 : [0];[6.7k];[6.7k]
      2 : [220];[OL];[OL]
      3 : [220];[OL];[OL]

The power mosfet in phase 1 is dead ?

Each is a suspect because a good mosfet should be hundreds of K ohms or higher.

Suggest to flux and remove the first mosfet, allow it to cool on your work table. Then measure the part again while it is on your bench. If the measurements remain this low, yes, it is defective. Repeat with the others as 6k7 ohms is too low for a good mosfet.

          I found two mosfets short-circuited.
          The others are OK.
However, when I measure directly on the motherboard, without the mosfets, between the gate and the source, I find 15k ohm (the value rises slowly).

Do replace the shorted mosfets and test again the resistance to ground. If higher than the earlier inspection, test the motherboard again with power.

Thanks ! I will do that.
I have a some dead motherboards and graphic cards, i can maybe find some compatible mosfets.

Can i use this QM3056M in replacement for NTMFS4C10N ?
(QM3056M have lower Rds(on), same Vdss, Vgs and bigger Idmax)

No. All phases should use the same MOSFETs so that they stay as balanced as possible. Also, QM3056M has much worse switching characteristics, much harder to drive and much slower to switch on/off which can make it less efficient.

Also as always the MOSFET driver has to be replaced at the same time as the MOSFETs.

                    Asus P4C800-E VRM issues
                    by c_corr
This board had the initial fault in VRM with high side Mosfet from PWM1 (phase 1) getting very hot. It also had the VRM caps quicly heating up in 10-15 seconds after power on.

This board uses mext ICs and Mosfets in VRM:
                    - ADP3180 PWM controller - in 3 phase mode
                    - ADP3418 as Modfet drivers
                    - High side Mosfets STD38NH02L (from ST)
                    - Low side Mosfets STD90NH02L

Some of the symptoms were very similar with the "Dead Asus P5P800-VM" in this forum.
I had the sawtooth voltage on Vcore too this was probably the cause of the Vcore caps...

                    Hi,

Try to repair a Thinkpad P72 EP720 NM-B723 MB with I7-8850H processor and N18E-Q1-KB-A1 (P3200) GPU with 6GB memory. Unfortunately there is noinfo what happened to the laptop. I got it disassembled with parts missing, like keyboard, battery.

Unfortunately I have no schematic available for me (requested in the sub porum) but got the boardview file.

Symptom: after connecting to the charger the power led light up for one-two second and switch off. After a couple secons the power led light up for half a second and switch off. No battery, no IO board, no...

I have this equipment that leaked moisture from the bottom, which the PQ3201 damaged the track and does not turn on the machine. remove all two mosfets from that area such as PQ3201(high) AND PQ3202(low). these feed the VCCSA rail. but on this track it has a very low resistance, approaching my absolute zero of my tester to ground (1.3ohm). Could the CPU be bad? I have made this measurement by desoldering the PL3201 coil, taking that measurement on the CPU side.

On the other hand, on the mosfet side, the PU3201 controller, which is the pwm controller, appears to have a damage since...

I got this gpu that does not work, is not detected in windows(not shown as a pcie device),the heatsink got a little warm. MSI 7600 GT PCIE, NX7600GT-T2D256EZ.

Tested in different motherboards, same issue. I got it with a capacitor broken(one leg was left), and an broken indictor related to fan pwm I think.
As a hobby I tinkered with arduino, I got a soldering iron and a hot air gun, no experience in repairing(occasionally watched videos of northridgefix)

I measured randomly capacitors for short and found some shorts on a few, and found short on a few mosfets....
