Hi,
Recently I was measuring up for a new HSF and I noticed that every single green and gold 10 v 2200 microF cap was leaking. All bulged with a crust of brown solid on the top. Soltek used decent ( think they were panasonic) caps for about half the board and some rubbish in green body with a gold negative stripe for the rest, (thanks to the acountancy team no doubt). Replaced all the green caps to be safe, cost about 8 quid from farnell for 10 x 2200mF x 10v (panasonic FM series), 8 1000mF 6.3 v and 1 x 1500 mF 6.3 volt (all FM panasonic or decent Rubys).
First time cap replacement job and first few removals and clean ups were hard work. Soldering very easy. I used a sewing needle in pliers and 50W iron to clear holes as no solder sucker!
No problems on booting. If you can solder, have a hot enough iron and can get decent caps then there is no reason why you can't save the life of your board by excising its poor quality caps.
Theres not much to lose so give it a go if you have some time to kill and some patience to spare!
