MSI K7D Master (MS-6501) Dual AMD Socket A - Bad caps

I've been on a MSI recapping binge lately... It goes in spirts I guess... Last month, I was over-run with Abit's, this month it's MSI...

Anyway, this one is a K7D Master (MS-6501) dual socket-a. The higher capacitance caps were Rubycon (1800uF and 2200uF), and I did not replace those, as they were not bad, nor was I worried about them. However, EVERY SINGLE 1000uF cap had vented. they were not Rubycons, but rather crappy 'Lelon'. I replaced 24 all together. This board was one of the few that I could not use 10mm replacements. They were just crunched way too close together. It would have looked totally rigged had I used 10mm. I replaced them with original sized 8mm caps.

A couple pics of the bad caps.

You can get Panasonic FC Caps from RS Components but they are all 10mm. I found RS to offer great service but expensive.

You could also use Digikey http://uk.digikey.com/ they sell panasonic fc but the prices are similar to RS components unless you want 100+
they talk about duty and brokerage fees included so they probably ship from the states.

I hoped to put it all down here for also future reference but i got bored now. If you find any other suppliers please post. I have searched other European countries but no success yet. some of the suppliers have very extensive stock and it is not easy to see from the data what specific brand of caps they are referring to. I am also looking for nichia brand of ultrabright white leds but no success with that either.

Dont forget what TC said above, but it may not be impossible with 10mm caps, it will look shoddy though. I would be worried about the sets of 3 inbetween the two sets of heat sinks, will be difficult there.

check the ms-6163 i did with 10mm caps from RS. Works but not my best looking effort at all. Anyway it is useful to see how the closely spaced caps interfere with others being placed near.

have a go but dont get pissed off and rush at those difficult positions like i did. hopefully in the future we will find a european source of 8mm caps.

i found a great site for the leds though http://www.ultraleds.co.uk/

Re: MSI K7D Master (MS-6501) Dual AMD Socket A - Bad caps

I know this is bringing up and old thread but it seems the bad cap plight has brought prices down dramatically on many MSI boards. I just bought this one for $44.00 (new) with the knowledge that replacing the 1000uf caps would make a good cheap board. So $44 for the board and another $10 to replace the headcrap canisters with good caps isn't a bad deal at all

Here's before and after shot of the board. It took a bit of work to get some of the caps to fit but it works well enough. Thanks to everyone at Badcaps Forums for making a seemingly scary task into one that was kinda fun!

I bent the leads at a 45deg angle where they exit the cap. Then about an 1/8" down, bent them parallel to the cap. They're not flush with the board but since they're crammed together, they seem to support each other well enough.
