    Soltek SL-65FVB

    Soltek SL-65FVB

I recently acquired a bargain P3 motherboard off eBay, as the title of this thread suggests it was a Soltek SL-65FVB, reportedly it's symptoms were "At times, it produces no picture on the screen..." amongst others

So it arrived in the mail yesterday, and I couldn't wait to rip those Tayeh & GSC's off... in my haste to right the wrongs (so to speak), I did manage to get a before picture, the butcher's bill was high however luckily I had enough SamXon Low ESR caps on hand as it needed...

    10 x 1500uF 6.3v
    6 x 1000uF 6.3v

And strangely enough a chipset cooler into the bargain

well, make sure you test the board as it is. i have a stupid experience, when once i recap a board before i make any test of it. the board is no post that now i can't tell if it is because failure in my work or the board have irreairable damage.

nice mobo btw. i dont see if it has an onboard vga. perhaps there are same bad caps in agp slot area.

No it doesn't have native AGP, it POSTs but I believe that the lack of a chipset cooler in any form is also a cause of issues, thankfully my recycle draw is full of such add-ons

I can see your point though, not sense wasting good caps on a dead board

so, it's another one for your collection, right? anyway all of my p3 mobo with onboard vga (via/sis) did not suffer from overheated nb chipset, with or without heatsink/cooler. but yes the addon heatsink will help, and let see if you can reproduce the error (losing display)...

you have an interesting website there : http://tazwegion.tripod.com/

Thanks Yanz, I was addicted to super socket 7 once (I still get nostalgic), but as the 'need for speed' increased so my bank balance rapidly declined, I blame it on F@H competitiveness

That's why I like to repair motherboards etc. that would otherwise normally go to a land fill or some such, much cheaper doing build-ups for people not needing highend components for Email/websurfing systems

Additionally, I don't know about most PC users (in general) but I can't financially keep up with all the new IT innovations, so where able I buy last years mid~high end components when I upgrade, as I've done with my latest build (retaining my R9600XT on an Nf3-Ultra platform)

Well it's completed the mandatory 10+ hour prime95 burn-in test flawlessly, so I'm happy to say yet another successfully recapped unit saved from the landfill!

Thanks for your input Yanz, I haven't owned many Pentium based platforms (being an AMD fan) so the chipset info was appreciated, I still added the cooler however as most likely it'll be used for F@H, and stability (in summer especially) is everything

So below you'll find the digicam shot of the completed work (after a nice methlyated spirits clean with a toothbrush), seems this board was produced by Soltek as a OEM package, as all identifying labels are adhesive even the BIOS/POST screens don't indicate a Soltek heritage

As always, any questions, comments or feedback are welcomed
