    Ga-7vaxp Ultra 1.2

...ahhh, where to begin... got this computer for free and it's been running a couple of years... began to restart, then went down hill fast... presently, won't even post with all busses unplugged and new memory installed... only sign of life is MEM_LED... tried clearing BIOS (has label, but no jumper) by pulling batt for and hour or so... measured voltages as per this forum and seem ok... DO I assume badcaps even though I don't see any that look bad??
    a little guidance, please... thanks...billl

not sure on the details on this MB off hand...bet some here knows them well thought....

Also sure there is some posts on this MB or close relative

Suggest you check the caps known to be bad on this forum GSC etc and if you got them on the MB them most likely they were the start of your probs........Oh and check out the piccies of stuffed ones

Since it was rebooting then went down hill fast sound like caps but the question now becomes what possible other damage may have been done due to the bad caps...I don't know off hand...maybe just a matter of replacing them with "suitable quality capacitors" and it will fire up

Not sure if TC (forum owner) has a kit for the Gigabyte MB's but will save you time sourcing if he does

There is a wealth of info here but will require a bit of searching.

HTH and I am sure someone more familiar with this MB will post a reply

    Cheers and good luck

ok... 3300u@6.3 are SANYO WG, 1500u@6.3 are United Chemicon KZG,
but, 1000u@6.3 are Nichicom HM(m)'s and there are a about a dozen CHOYO 100u@10 and 22u@16 around the periphery

Sounds like then Nichicom HM's might be bad ones and certainly the Choyo's (comments requested)

Also pulled Athlon heat sink, and 'pad' was in bad shape with spotty crust on top of chip... I will use grease to put it back... hope it's still good

Borrowing a known good ATX supply to test..

      Any further suggestions appreciated

        1) Test with a known good PSU, preferably recently recapped.

        2) Use Arctic Silver 3/5 after cleaning both the heatsink and CPU die surfaces. If possible, polish the heatsink surface with 400-grit sandpaper to a mirror finish.

        3) Replace only the Nichicon HM(M)s first. The Sanyos, the NCCs and the small Choyos should be OK. If there are small Choyos near the DIMM slots, Northbridge or Southbridge, replace them them if the problem is still present.

Thanks, linuxguru... btw... when I was cleaning the chip face of 'pad crud' I noticed and faint 'image' of what looked like 'chip circuit' in one corner... is that significant of anything??? ... and I did use Brasso to polish the heat-sink, but the 400grit would probably make a more uniform surface for heat transfer... thanks again...billl

              Re: Ga-7vaxp Ultra 1.2

Since cleaning the heat sink is mentioned. I have seen all sorts of suggestions as to how to clean off the thermal compound. One suggestion was Acetone. It does not do a good job. I tried Mineral Turpentine, it cleans Artic Silver 5 and the compound normally supplied with heat sinks, it does a very clean job with a moistened rag.

For cleaning of Arctic Silver I use syntetic spirit and it works just great. Same I use for cleaning after soldering, so, one that fit all purposes

BTW, I had a bad experience (unreliability, weird issues) when not replacing small caps of inferior brands like Choyo, Teapo, GSC... I would strongly suggest replace ALL electrolyte caps of known bad brands and known good brands (Nichicon) - just known bad serie Nichicon HM

thanks gang... I forget what I used to clean the 'pad' remains off the chip, etc.... I'm still hoping it didn't get too hot... I'd thought about the small ones too... I'd like this 'old' socket-A machine to last a while... it was serving me very well..

We'll try the above PSU... caps... etc, schedule and see what happens... thanks all...billl

Sorry for the dearth of update information, folks... got the new caps from 'TC' and have the old ones out and 'holes' sucked clean, but my progress was interrupted an old lady who tried to kill me at a controlled intersection... she ran a red light according to the county sheriff who was in the car behind her... talk about good witnesses... but she totalled my (wife's) car and almost 'totalled' me, but things are getting back to normal again, so I can continue 'fixing' this mb... hear that confidence?... stay tuned... regards...billl
