    Re: MS-7548 Failed TK Caps

Thanks for the info Scenic. I had looked at that Asrock board last week. It was the only mATX am2+ at the time. The problem then was that ArkaineDRK said in feedback reviews that the Phenom II X4 940 (125W) didn't work in it. That's the CPU the system has. ArkaineDRK has since said it is working and working well. That may give me another fallback position if the recap fails.

Now that you showed me a $50 1155 Mobo, maybe I'll set up an I5 system for him and say happy birthday. For that matter I'm still running an Athlon X2, so I would like 6X faster myself. I didn't realize that the 1155 boards went so low in price.

They are, but as socket AM2(+) is more than dead by now, you can't really expect high quality boards anymore.

121usd if you already have SATA drives (1155 boards lack IDE).
I was bored and cobbled a bundle together

Celeron Dualcore G530 (2.4GHz, Sandybridge based (obviously))
    Biostar H61MGC microATX board
Team Group 2x 2GB DDR3-1333 RAM (cheaper than two smaller sticks for some reason)

$120.97 plus shipping. Even though it's "only" a Celeron, it would smoke any AM2 system.
    I know it's kinda off-topic here but.. yeah :P

I ordered enough to get all the 1800 uf caps so I'll start there. If this fixes the brother-in laws board for less than $20 that would be great.

I don't know how, but in the first post, I missed all of the other TK caps on the board (the two near the chipset and the two near the ATX Connector) I'd replace them all too.

It looks like this site is right up my alley. I keep the relatives going and we all hate to say goodbye to usable computers. Like Peacemaker45, I have a bad ms-7548 with bulging caps. This symptom for me is fan on and no post at all.
I ordered the caps c_hegge suggested and we'll see how it goes. It makes sense to me that the phenom II X4 would choke on poor power. Now on to fill out the profile and wait for the parts.

BC doesn't actually make terribly much from cap sales, most of what he makes is from recapping jobs

    c hegge,

Thank You, for the recommendations and advice.

I see the other caps you pointed out. I might just replace all of the TK caps on the board for peace of mind.

I will order the caps here on Badcaps.net since I imagine that the proceeds from sales are probably what keep the site running.

Now I just have to find the time. It will probably be a couple of weeks. I will check back in to let y'all know how it works out.

    1. If you want to keep the cost down, then there's probably no need to poly-mod it. Use https://www.badcaps.net/store/produc...roducts_id=152 . they are good electrolytics and should be fine for the usefull life of the PC.

    2. If you're not modding anything, then just use the nine that were originally there. I think that there might be two similar caps between the DIMM slots and floppy connector. Replace them too.

    3. The CPU is *probably* fine. It just may not like getting an unstable voltage.

    Hello All,

I have an MS-7548 with the same bank of failed TK caps as Mazade, so no need to post new pics.

I am going to attempt the repair myself. I consider myself competent in electronics repair, a hobbyist if you will.

The power supply voltages check out with a DMM but I am going to O-scope it to check for excessive ripple.

A few questions before I get started:

    1. What caps should be used? (cost vs. practicality, the thing is 5 yrs old)

    2. How many? (I noticed that mazade used 1 more than OEM)

    3. Should my CPU be okay? (My wife first noticed it freezing up a couple months ago but now it doesnt even POST)

Well, typing on the recapped MS-7548 board.
Managed to get an X2 6000+ processor & failed-cap board from a guy on ebay... borrowed a 1GB
stick of ram from a friend and this Puppy(booted a live-CD of puppy linux) is moving right along.
Temperature hovers between 29C and 31C... I performed some of HardInfo's benchmarks a few times, the CPU temp momentarily touched on 34C

    Things seem great so far.
Thanks for all the helps & tips!
Thanks for supplying the caps needed to fix another BadCaps board! ^_^

Til next time - bye for now.

    Re: MS-7548 Failed TK Caps

Well, although I took a few days to order the poly caps, I got them in today and 'slapped' them into place.
The previous, failed, setup was lacking a capacitor in that left-end spot, so I'm assuming that these superior caps can allow for it to remain empty.

All I need now is to get some ram and a cpu to test this puppy out with - ebay here I come!!! ^_^

I asked about it because it kind'a looks like someone removed it.

See if you can find photos of the board on-line and see if that board has one there.

The Mosfet... that is very weird, I did not do that.
It looks as though one should be there, should I try to find one to replace it?

Do not lower voltage on caps when you don't know what the circuit voltage is.
    - For the Vcore caps you know by the CPU specs.

Any others you have to check, usually with a DMM but you could bust out a pencil and paper and work out the schematic to figure it out if you REALLY wanted too.

And yes, the row of 8 are the Vcore caps.

One is for Vcore, the other one for Vtt (termination voltage) (I think)

A single cap would I think work, but there isn't any objection as to fill other places as well.

Seasonic B12 BC-550 – barely 2 years old and with BAD CAPS already!
    by momaka
I know I've been a little scarce lately (like the last 2-3 years), but I'm still here and still doing my thing with fixing PSUs.

For today's considerations, I have a Seasonic B12 BC-550 [A551bcafh] 550 Watt ATX power supply for you (click on links for full size images).

It's a modern ATX unit with fixed (non-modular) cables and an 80-plus bronze certificate. Here's the label:

    Heathkit IO-4205 Power Supply Caps
    by eryjus
    Hello,

First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."

Identifying caps on an old Zoom 9000
    by Paxman_Swede
    Hello!

I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.

The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.

I have studied the board and...

HannStar Hanns-G HC194d LCD monitor repair
    by momaka
Normally, I never post repairs this quick after I do them, because… I am usually very slow. But today, I’m making an exception here. Why? No idea. Perhaps only because the repair details are still “fresh” in my head… which is ironic, given this is a 16 year old monitor that hardly anyone will care about today. It is new to me, though. I picked it up last November from someone on my local Craigslist. It wasn’t very close to where I live, but was close to a family friend that I had to go visit anyways. So after watching the posting on Craigslist for a few weeks and seeing it getting...

Help with switching power supply caps
    by captain150
I'm trying to repair two old VCRs, they both have bad caps. One has leaky ones, the other would barely run until I subbed in some caps from another power supply I had laying around (though they are the wrong values). This vcr works for an hour or two, but then the power supply starts whining and the picture gets lines in it. I didn't replace all the secondary caps, so another voltage might still be problematic, or the values I used are too far off.
I've been on mouser and digikey but the options are a bit overwhelming. I just need some new ones that will work. They don't need to be top quality,...
