    optiplex gx280sff worth a recap?

Are the sff gx280's worth recapping as far as lasting or will the heat issue still be a problem? Anyone have experience with these?
    Thanks!

The actual parts aren't going to cost you much at all. Heat is of course still going to be an issue, but it's hard getting around that.

      Thanks for the reply,
I went ahead and recapped 1 as I have about 50 on hand. I did use poly caps on the v core and also changed the power supply fan. Still blows the hot air but is running pretty good now on day 2. Not sure how confident I am on selling these just yet because of the heat issue with them.

Have about 50 on hand and about 80% have swollen caps in the power supply and all on the boards. A lot of work to get them all going, not sure if it will be worth it?

      Anyways, thanks for the input!

use polys in the hotspots, recap the psu and check its fan and you're good to go

doing a full poly recap is better on the long run, but with 50 units.. that's getting a bit expensive..

i only did one of those so far..(i avoid anything P4 / early Athlon64 (S754/939) and older by now, unless i can get it for free)
used polys in the hotspots, pannys and rubys for the rest of the board & PSU. still going strong, but about to be retired by my brother cause it's simply too slow for his needs..

Yeah I think a lot of polys are 125C+ as of the late. Minimum being 105C, and that's an honest 105C.

All of the Optiplex GX2xx series in a SFF case runs hot. I have a GX270 SFF completely ghetto modded with a huge copper heatsink, a blower that sounds like a hair dryer, heatsinks on the chipsets, RAM. Anyway, I have a total of 3 fans + 1U Seasonic PSU 40mm fan....and it's still outrageously hot.

Not much you can do about it.

one reason why I think they overheat is cause the copper fins are too close together, they easily get a quilt of dust layers up on the intake real easily

wipe the heatsink and the top of the processor off with high isoprobyl. wipe them clean, apply high grade, hope for the best

I have about 200 of this model number I get them in quite frequently like what has already been said I wouldn't repair them to sell unless I got them for free. Of course I do this for part of my job so I do repair them here at work.

Re: optiplex gx280sff worth a recap?

It depends on your market, I have done some SX280s, the ones with the external power supply and everybody likes them for quiet. They do develop problems with 2200uf and 820uf of course. Repair is easy though.

I was bored yesterday so I took a Dimension 8300 2.8Ghz, 800fsb that had bad 820uf @6.3v by the CPU. I recapped with 560uf 4volt polys. It had six 820uf @6.3v and four 560uf capacitors by the CPU in a line by the CPU so I figured since it was still posting with the 6 bad ones, it couldn't hurt to try the 560uf's, so far so good.

Believe it or not I had someone saw the Optiplex GX110 sitting on a shelf collecting dust and wanted it so it has gone to a good home. I did upgrade from 256Mb to 512 Mb for him and it still is OK for internet and Word Processing.

I have like 3 of those gx110's. but I also have some 512m 133 sticks, and 1ghz p3 chips. so I can run it with a gig of ram

but I don't. cause so far, they're not worth it lol. stil sitting in my dining room
