    Asus k8v-x se

Asus k8v-x se This has been a good board - but suddenly got BSOD while trying to install service pack. Several attempts to reload OS on SATA drive resulted in same BSOD - after XP appeared to load the start files on drive - reboot, Blue screen. Then I tried an older IDE drive - same result. Tried recovery console, fixmbr, fixboot - same result. Checked both drives on other PC's - OS loads normal. The CD-ROM's seem to work. Checked both drive with Seatools - passed 100%. Figuring the HD controller is bad, not reading the drive - could this be from caps? Will try to take time tonight to pull board and check with ESR - but visually they appear OK.

Which caps? Show some pics. Those KZGs will fail and they look completely normal.

Also consider that it's the PSU.

I'll get some photos up later, have to work right now. I didn't test the PSU, will do that too. Forgot to add - I did run memtest from bootable CD - memory checked fine.

Don't "test" the PSU. Open it up and check the caps. Most likely that old 20-pin ATX PSU has had its caps stressed beyond their spec for the past 10 years, more than likely they need to be replaced.

I've opened up some old Young Year ATX PSUs (A very popular mid-end ATX PSU at the time), and I've noticed that while the PCB design is identical, they have different caps from model to model. Some of them junk, and some of them not, but they all need attention. I only plan on repairing those that don't use the difficult to source 10mm capacitors for now.

Finally got time to work on this problem. Swapped power supplies - didn't get a blue screen this time - but windows didn't recognize that there was a drive. six caps near cpu are rubycon MBZ's - 14 KZG - 5 TMZ, plus couple of little ones. Testing with blue esr meter - a lot of them measured 0 - just a few measured .02/.03 - is this because they are in circuit or were they all that bad? Noted that some started out at .05/.06 then slowly ticked down to 0. Thanks, TR

The CPU caps are in parallel hence they cannot be measured in circuit. Lift'em out and see.

KZGs should all be replaced. TMZ -- I wish I knew. So little information is available on UCC TMZ, I have so many of them, so I would love to know their specs and if they are a reliable series from UCC.

download memest86+ and see if your ram might have a few errors

ugh.. look at the toasty CPU VRM area (front & back of the board) and the toasty FET below the AGP slot..
discolored board and all... ugh.. asus.. >.>

but yeah... check your RAM with memtest86+ (click). if that checks fine, get rid of ALL the KZG's.
i've had an A8V series board from a customer here.. fried a couple fets because the KZG's were dead as a rock (even though most of them looked OK).. they dried up

in hot areas, the sleeve also seems to shrink a bit and get slightly darker.

Quick update - the cooling fan on the PS I used to test started to get noisy - when I opened it had bloated caps. Opened the original PS - recapped and things seemed to work. But lately system has been going blank - or locking up in windows - can only reboot. Next step is to recap MB. Thought perhaps it could be graphics card or cpu overheat - but seem to be cool (with extra fan) - ran memtest and a graphics mem test, showed no problems. Voltages are 12v=12.35, 5v=5.29, 3.3v runs about 3.26, 1.5v=1.55 - all according to Asusprobe.
