Fixing Gigabyte GTX 670 OC 2GB

    Hello everyone,

i have a Gigabyte GTX 670 OC 2GB here which shows no picture.

    - Fans are spinning
    - Windows detects the card as „Microsoft VGA Adapter“ when inserted as 2nd card
    - MemVoltage = 1.6V
    - Vcore = 990mV
    - 3,3V and 5V ok
    - Pex = 1.054V
    - No short circuit
    - All resistances i could check are ok

Is there anybody who wants to help me?
    Greetings
    Alex

mostly memory comunication fault. bad connection under gpu, bad connection under ram chip.

did windows try to download driver for that second card?

      Hi,
I'll check that and get back to you.

        I was wrong.
Windows detects the card as „Microsoft Basic Display Adapter“ when inserted as 2nd card.
And windows is not trying to download the driver.

            Hey,
now windows is downloading and installing the driver correctly. It just took some time to start.
            So what does it mean?

Re: Fixing Gigabyte GTX 670 OC 2GB

as somebody alrerady mentioned your card has problems with either the ram or the connection between gpu and ram. its sometimes normal behavior for card beeing detected as "basic video adapter" and other "standard vga graphics adapter"....

in most cases you ´ll get a blank screen or blackscreen when windows is loading the correct driver for your card... after deinstalling drivers card works again in "safe mode" as mentioned...

Re: Fixing Gigabyte GTX 670 OC 2GB

If the GTX670 problem is related to the vram or the connection between gpu and vram it can be worked around by disabling broken memory channel. For GTX 670 it would reduce the VRAM amount from 2GB to 1.5GB and the memory bus width from 256bit to 192 bit. But it is quite fast, pure software solution.

This can be done with "Old NVIDIA artifacts" utility - see downloads and user manual

Here is example of its usage on GM1017-based quadro - the upper screenshot is the initital state, the lower one is the state after fix.

P.S. I am the author of the utility mentioned above. It supports only GF1xx, GK1xx, and GM107 chips.
Later chips starting with GTX950 GM2xx are NOT supported.

                  Hello everyone,
now i was able to run mats. Here are the results. Seems like the memory chips are ok?

                    Hello everyone,
i got some news. When i connect the GTX670 with RiserCable as 2nd card. The card works, see Screenshots below.
But when i connect the GTX670 directly to the mainboard, the card is not detected.
                    Any ideas?

One of the series capacitor for a PCIe lane is most likely broken off. Or a PCIe lane is bad. Visual inspection and diode mode as always.

did u try all output ports while on riser as first card?

Visually, I can't see any problem with the capacitors. Yesterday i tested all capacitors (above PCIE) with Multimeter in Diode Mode. Iam not sure if i did it rigtht. Black measuring tip to ground and red measuring tip to the capacitor. All capacitors dropping to 0.6V.

Yes i tested already all outputs, no picture .

I was wrong. To be honest I can't remember. So i tested it again...and i get a picture with RiserCable and only the GTX670 connected, see screenshot below.

And something crazy after this, i tested the GTX670 directly connected to the mainboard and got a picture too. Only x8 instead of x16. After 15 minutes the picture freezed.

                              Soo...wheres the problem?

                                check capacitors/resistances on 9-16pcie lines

In order to get a better overview, I have written down all the values of the diode mode.
Number 15 has the lowest values. Number 10 has the biggest difference. See Screenshot below.

yep 15 can be problemtic. try to replace capacitors, but it is connected directly to GPU so if it not help only thing is reball or replace chip. But 8x gives u maybe even same performance as 16x

I will do that. But there must be something else. Because i got only one time a picture with x8 connection. Most time i get no picture and i dont know if this can be only from number 15.
