    BenQ FP71E reluctant to start

    Hi Guys,

    I have an old BenQ FP71E which started playing up about a year ago - if turned off, when trying to turn it on the on light would come on, but then when you would expect the 'splash screen' there would be no display, a high pitched noise would sound and the 'on' light would go out. If I tried to turn it on a few more times (and/or left it in the sun) it would eventually start. I found myself leaving the monitor on for a month at a time! and then eventually splashed out on a new 24".

    So now... for a bit of fun, I thought I might crack it open and see if it is fixable. This is my first look in to the world of recapping - but it is something that interests me. I have a few ADSL modem/routers about which also might benefit from this.

    Does this sort of behavior sound like bad caps on the power supply?

    I've taken a few pics of the board - the purple 'elite' caps appear to be a bit bulgey on the top and I have noticed the board looks like it has gotten a little warm near here. Maybe replacing these caps is a good place to start?

    Any pointers in the right direction for this fix up project would be greatly appreciated.

      High pitched noise sometimes indicates caps going bad as they vent.

      Replace all Elite caps around that heat sink. All 4 are definitely bloated.

      Most here will recommend that you replace ALL the caps on the board due to age, usage, and to get a better brand of caps like Rubycon, Panasonic, or United Chemicon.

      Also, for Benqs (you can search here for their numerous problems), you will have to test the C5707 transistors, FU9024, picofuse, and resolder all the transformer joints.

          Those 2 1000uF/16V sure looked domed!

          One of the 470uF/35V also looked domed. So replace them all.

          Please post your location so if you need help to locate repalcement caps.

          Personally, I prefer Panasonic FMs from Digikey.

              Thanks for the advice so far guys - I'm in Brisbane, Australia. I would guess that Jaycar / RS Components / Farnell would be my best bets locally - but I'm not against buying online if it works out well.

                  Lucky you, I only found one failed in mine.

                  Did fine 2 shorted transistors and a blown picofuse, waiting on fuses.

                      Unless I am very much mistaken, Jaycar don't stock any electros that I'd ever dream of using in a re-cap. I normally use Hitano (from X-On or WES) but WES are trade only and X-On effectively have a MOV. RS and Farnell do carry suitable caps, and Farnell do free shipping for web orders (min$10 for CC).

                      Make sure you use low-ESR 105C caps of a reputable brand/series (Panasonic FM is a popular one), and check the dimensions will allow the replacements to fit BEFORE you order ...

                              I ordered from Farnell yesterday and noticed a new Panasonic series called FR, which seems to be equivalent to, if not better than FM.

                                  My 3.5 years old monitor (BenQ SW2700pt) started to black out for 1-2 sec every minute or so, it was doing this even with PC disconnected from it. I searched online and read that it's probably aging capacitors and there's a workaround to lower the brightness.

                                  I lowered it from 100 to 65% and it indeed helped, but after a couple of months the issue returned... I continued to lower the brightness, but it helped only for a couple of hours at most, then I needed to lower it further... Turning the monitor off and waiting for it to cool down also helped for a short time, after which it...

                                  First, I am a complete noob with high voltage stuff. I'm learning, but I need help by someone looking over my shoulder.

                                  I recently came into posession of a Heathkit IO-4205 5MHz Dual Trace Oscilloscope. The documentation is copyright 1978. I'm told it works.

                                  I opened it up to check the caps before I applied power, and found the following black caps and wanted to know what they were. They are on the power supply board. I was able to read the name and model and came up with, "Nytronics 162J-1, 0.1uF, 20% tolerance, 2000VDC."

                                  Hello!

                                  I have two projects on my work bench. One is a friends dead JBL Xtreme speaker with a blown voltage regulator and corresponding bulged and shorted cap. That cap has clear markings so I know what replacement I need for it.

                                  The other project however is a whole different deal. It's a Zoom 9000 guitar effect from the 90th that has developed a devil hound howl when there is no input from the guitar. I'm guessing caps problem. So, since I don't really use this effect anymore I thought it would be a perfect project to learn on.

                                  Help with switching power supply caps

                                  I'm trying to repair two old VCRs, they both have bad caps. One has leaky ones, the other would barely run until I subbed in some caps from another power supply I had laying around (though they are the wrong values). This vcr works for an hour or two, but then the power supply starts whining and the picture gets lines in it. I didn't replace all the secondary caps, so another voltage might still be problematic, or the values I used are too far off.
                                  I've been on mouser and digikey but the options are a bit overwhelming. I just need some new ones that will work. They don't need to be top quality,...
