Apple Cinema Display 23", Acrylic - Problems

    Hello everybody!

My first post here, congratulations on this exciting forum!

Sometime ago I purchased an old Apple display (the one in the title, I don't know how to find out about the exact model). I use it with my macbook pro (2.4 santa rosa model) through the Apple's ADC to DVI adaptor, with an external apple power supply.

The display works decently, but usually after three days or so of being constantly connected to the macbook pro, it goes black and won't light up again. The light at the bottom right corner is dim, and when touched it will brighten up momentarily and dim again. The display won't respond to anything ( unplug everything, restart, reset SMC, PRAM, VRAM etc). When I disconnect the screen and leave it for a week or so unused, it works again for a short while, as previously. I also noticed (once I think) that the small light flickers occasionally.

Some online fixes suggest replacing the external power adapter, which I did by trying another one definitely working and had the same problem, so I guess this is not the case.

One of the responses I got from the MacOSXHints forum is that most probably this is due to the inverter board. So I decided to do a little operation, and, according to a few posts I read here, replace any electrolytic capacitors that may look problematic. There were two electrolytic capacitors on the inverter as you can see in the images below:

I noticed there was a small abnormality on one of the two, as you can see in the following image:

So I decided to replace both these capacitors, in case this would solve the problems. Below is an image of the inverter board with the new capacitors (they were both 35V, 220uF):

I connected the screen to the computer, and it was working fine! I took an image of both the inverter and logic board (notice the green led on the logic board, indicating that the screen in on).

I closed everything up, I replugged the screen to the computer, and....
NOTHING AGAIN! The frustration... The anger... The lost time...

So, any thoughts, anyone? I really want to keep this screen, and I am really keen on repairing it myself, even if I have to dig deeper.

Thank you and sorry for the long first post

    Inline images = bad idea.
Use thumbnails : it is impossible to browse the post without a great deal of scrolling. I didn't even try to read the text. .....

I would happily change that if someone could point me to the 'edit' button, which doesn't seem to exist.

It is interesting how you didn't bother to read the text, however you took the time to write this post... Drink your beer and have a nice day.

        Easy there fella....

I believe the EDIT function is gone after so many minutes.

You just upload the pictures and don't put in the Hyperlink, then the pix will not be inline. However, you won't be able to see the pictures unless you log in (> no pictures for non-members).

Anyway, your pictures are too large so people has to scroll left and right....

From your description, I don't think it is the inverter board. The caps you changed did not bulge. However, they are Crapxon, I think.

Inverter board failure normally would allow you to retry after unplugging the ac power.

I think you need to look at the Main/Signal board on this display. You may find there are bad capacitors there.

        Post pix (attachment only).

I don't have lots of time nowadays, and while I appreciate the hi-res, I can spend the time I would
otherwise use scrolling left to right, in giving you some ideas/advice/whatever-you-want-to-call-them,
specially because I have two units like yours right now.......
but I guess I'll better drink a beer and have a nice day.

I didn't know there was only a limited time for editing one's posts.. usually in forums you can edit your post at any time. I'll keep that in mind for the future.

The other board in the last image looks fine, however there is one more board which I did not check, underneath the metal covering in the last image (should be the signal board). I guess I should re-open the screen and dig some more. I will post some images when I get there.
            Thank you for your reply!

              AggeLON,

I am curious if you found anything with the signal board. I have same monitor that light up all the time. All CCFLs are on. I can see a very faint that the display actually has video, but it is very faint. I will post a picture if I can tonight.

Apple Watch Charging Controller Schematics / Boardview - 820-02601
                by a_p3rson
                Hi there,

I'm looking for anyone who might have information on Apple's embedded Apple Watch charging daughterboard, ID 820-02601. This is currently used by Anker in their Apple Watch charging products, but likely by other Apple partner brands as well.

You can see the board referenced in ChargerLab's teardown of the Anker Y1811 3-in-1 MagSafe cube - they discuss the "Apple Watch wireless charging circuit" about 2/3rds down the page. It's not pictured, but the board ID reads 820-02601-A, which sure sounds like Apple.
                This daughterboard uses an interesting...

Apple MacBook Pro A1707 Touch Bar intermittent problems
                by mferna14
Hi, today I am working on a Apple MacBook Pro A1707 Touch Bar intermittent problems. The problem was no display. When open the motherboard I noticed that one of the VCORE inductors falling off, very weak solder. The logic board is neat & clean & no liquid spill. I soldered the inductor back again & got the display perfectly. Now what happens, it sometimes just shuts down by itself & cannot turn on immediately. The fans start to run to very fast (blank display) & have to turn off by pressing On/Off button for several seconds. I again turn on & I see Apple logo but no boot...
