    Dell E173FPb smoking

Hi, great site you have here, i have been able to fix a few screens just by reading here. But don't know what to check next on this one, could be diode, resistor, or transformer not really sure. When i first fixed it, it had green power light then amber, black screen. I took it apart found one shorted c5707 (Q759) and one power mosfet J598 (Q751) and one blown 3amp pico fuse. Replaced with good used parts and new fuse, also desoldered transformers then resoldered them. Had it working for about four hours then it flickered a few times and back to black screen. Took it apart again, only a blown fuse. I put automotive bulb for fuse and tried it again, this is when the magic smoke happened. I then changed one blue cap (C757) don't think it needed to be changed, and resoldered one transformer (T753). Tried powering it up again backlights came on but the smoke also appearred, so i pulled the plug. I have attached pics, it looks like its shorted from c757 to t751, thats where the smoke was coming from. Maybe its getting to much power? You can see the burn mark in the partial pic. Sorry for the long spiel but wanted to say what i had did to this point. Thanx in advance for any help in this matter.

This one really suffers from bad quality component leads, transformer pins and bunch of very small electrolytic capacitors. Have to replace them and remove transformers, scrape pins clean, and reinstall, thoughly resolder components solder joints till they are wetted. Horrible.

    Cheers, Wizard

It sounds like the overcurrent protection isn't working. The schematic for the e173fpb's inverter is largely similar to the schematic for the e172fpb's. There's a PNP transistor (sorry, forget the number) for each backlight which shuts off if there's too much current, and sometimes, these fail to a short. IIRC they are FU9024N transistors. Replace these and see if it helps.

Thanks for the replies, I resoldered transformers, same issue, i did change one mosfet J598 43 with a J598 48 at (Q751) originally. My understanding is that the fet turns your backlights off. I'm wondering why its seems to be shorting if thats what it is doing, i have circled it in red, don't believe there is any trace there. Could it be a resistor, diode or transformer. Thanks for any replies.

Maybe this one is unrepairable, good for parts only. I would just like any opinions on why its burning in that particular spot, no trace there. I repaired a Benq monitor and works fine basically the same as this one. Don't believe power should go across there. Checked all 4 transistors, 2 fets, and fuses, still good after powering on and smoke making an appearance. Haven't changed any of the small caps as of yet, none on hand. Any thoughts! Tia.

Dell E6400 PT434 type Battery Charging Stuck at 1%. Battery Pinouts?
            by Bowline
My question pertains to understanding the control circuity inside a Dell PT434 type battery used in Dell E6400, E6410 and other Dell notebooks?

Does anyone have a circuit diagram for the inside of a Dell PT434 battery and/or a description of how the control lines work to control this battery?

My reason for asking is I have a battery which I cannot get to charge beyond 1% in a Dell E6410 or E6400.
The LED bar graph charge indicator on the battery shows one LED lighted when the info button is pressed.
I have tried multiple different Dell power adapters. My Dell...

A funny fuse story – Lumix LX100 II
            by corrize
Hello, I disassembled this dead camera, and found this WTF… Two fuses soldered one above the other !
I was pretty sure nobody touched it before, but that can't be from factory. There is flux, and capacitor is probably missing.
            The other weird thing : the fuses are « G » fuse : (0.75A – 8V), seems very low. The original fuse should be « O » : (32V 2,5A).
There is « O » mark beside. All fuses have the same mark letter on main board. So, I can deduce it's a « O » fuse.
And this correspond to the issus I saw : when I plug the battery, I measure the voltage dropping...

Dell Latitude 5420 does not start (no post) need help to find the reason why
            by F R 2568
            Hello all,

this is my first post, so if I make mistakes please do not hesitate to point them out, thank you in advance.

I got a Dell Latitude 5420 (Service Tag: 7RFM6D3, Motherboard: GDF40 LA-491P Rev.: 2.0 (A01)) which does not start and I want to repair it. These are the symptoms:

If the laptop is only connected to the AC adapter (battery removed):

When I press the power button, the keyboard backlight and the display backlight are turning on. Caps key light is lightning, but key does not respond to pressing it.

            The power/battery...

            by nimbus2000
Dell Optiplex 7040 MT (Service Tag S/N DSNJ992)

Built a PC on this used motherboard(DELL MIQ170R Swordfish DDR4 MT 14057-1). At first, when I plug in power cable(without even pushing start button) fans immediately start working at normal speed then after 4-5 seconds it starts working at full speed and stays that way until you manually turn it off by holding power button. While fans are working nothing shows up on screen.
Also tried turning it on without CPU and RAM. Acts same. As soon as power cable is plugged in fans working at normal speed then goes to full speed after a while......

            Looking for Dell Latitude 5520 / 5530 / 5540 RJ45 network connector replacement
            by diamon
I have a Dell Latitude 5530 with a damaged RJ45 network connector. See the attached pictures.

Have already searched on Farnell / Aliexpress / Ebay and had contact with several suppliers on Aliexpress and Ebay, but they cannot deliver this connector.
Is there someone inside the EU, who has these connector(s) or perhaps defective motherboard(s) for these laptop models I have mentioned in the topic title.

            Pictures of these boards:
