  • Dell 2209wa - momentarily blinks every two seconds [ Video + Audio + Service Manual ]

    Hello,

This is the second time I'm asking for advice in this forum. The first was about troubleshooting a PSU, which resulted in a successful repair. Naturally I want another fix of the Ikea effect.

Today I'm trying to diagnose a Dell 2209wa monitor manufactured 2008, and used 12000 h (according to factory menu). It worked fine all these years up until the other day. You'll find schematics in the attached pdf.

Please excuse possible erroneous terminology below -- I'm not that familiar with the domain.

    Problem

    Visible:
Screen is working normally if it's been unused for a while. After a few minutes the picture disappears (backlight goes out) for about one 60th - 120th of a second (estimated from video recording, attached in this post). This repeats about every 2 seconds.

It happens regardless of video source, whether there's any video input, or whether video cables are connected.

    Audible:
Very faint buzzing coinciding with the blinking, primarily heard when pressing ear up against the monitor. Seems to be the loudest fairly close to the power cable socket.

I could predict that the screen would fail from the louder than normal buzzing that came from the monitor pre-failure. That loud buzzing is something I haven't noticed since it started blinking.

    What I've done
    • Inspected the power supply board. No visible problems. No bulging caps felt.
    • Disassembled it down to the CCFLs. Couldn't inspect their sockets without desoldering them from the inverter board though, so didn't do that.
    • Looked through the service manual (attached) and got the impression that the backlight will turn off if there is a problem with one of the lights, but I don't know enough to intuit the timescales of the processes described in the manual, and so I can't determine if it's at all a likely cause.
    • Unable to determine if LCD also turns off, due to the very short time that it goes black (1/60th of a second).
    • The power LED does not blink, but on the other hand it keeps shining long after unplugging the power so I disregard it as a clue.

    What I haven't done
    • Inspected the inverter board. It's soldered down to the lamp sockets and covered with a sheet of frosted mylar film held down with double sided sticky tape. The surface mounted electrolytic cap was visible, but I currently don't know how to read the signs of when those go bad.
    • Removed the CCFLs. They look fragile. I don't know if they're locked in place or can just be pulled out. I can't see the sockets without desoldering the inverter board from all 12 sockets. The tubes look fine, nothing out of the ordinary.
    • Measured voltages. I'm not that experienced so I imagine it will take a lot of time and energy for me to measure safely. I'd prefer to have some kind of plan, and some idea where to start, instead of making arbitrary measurements.

I'm wondering if someone has any intuition as to the cause and where I should concentrate my efforts? I imagine that the frequency of the blinking and the short timescale of the black screen would give some clues to someone with experience.

Can I exclude more parts by doing some additional tests?

Panasonic P58V11B 8 and 12 blinks error "fix"
    by Biruslapio
Bought this TV used not working, panel flashed briefly on power up and it was blinking 8 times, a quick look on SS board revealed a common fault on the 3uF 250V capacitors, C201 to C205 (C1620X in the service manual), the solder joints were all cracked, C201 and C205 pins were darkened and some sparking had occurred on them, C201 was split open and clearly overheated in its last hours, replaced that one and resoldered the others, 8 blinks fixed.

Also the previous owner broke the antenna connector by taking the TV out of the wall mount forgetting to unplug it, I desoldered the tuner...

Lenovo Legion 5 high fan spin turns off after 34 seconds
    by twonk9098
    Hi all,

I have a Lenovo Legion 5 with a Ryzen 7 series CPU and RTX 3070 GPU. My issue is that it turns on and all seems fine except after a few seconds the fans spin up high and the laptop turns off after 34 seconds.
I can get into bios and can even boot and login to Windows however after 34 seconds no matter if Im at the bios screen or booted into Windows it will just turn off.

I have managed to run HWmonitor and the temperatures of the CPU and GPU are fine, I can also touch the heatsync which is warm but not hot.

I have tried a few new bios but exactly...

Looking for help with a Viewsonic VP230mb where the backlight comes on only momentarily
    by lostone
Hello, I came here after finding some similar questions asked on other monitors and hope someone here can help me get an ancient Viewsonic VP230mp (23" 4:3 LCD) back to working condition.

First a little background, I have a background in computer and electrical engineering, and I'm smart enough to know I know nothing about LCD displays and how they work. For this topic I'm as green as they come.
When the display is turned on the viewsonic logo displays in the uppper left for 2 seconds then the screen goes black, the power LED is green (on) and when a computer is connected...

    Sony XR-55X90J 4 blinks
    by Nicktronic
Hey guys, got this Sony that turns on momentarily and then goes black with 4 blinks of the standby light. I can't find a service manual, but best guess was the Local Dimming board based on a similar TV saying LD_ERR or BCM_ERR. I found a replacement, but it didn't work. Before I put more money into replacement boards, Im wondering if anybody has seen this issue and what worked for them, or has the service manual for this specific TV.

    Thanks!...

Panasonic TC-P55ST50 8 blinks then no blinks
    by Andre Gilbert
Hello! yes I know there is already lots of information about this issue. I have a Panasonic TC-P55ST50 that originally displayed an 8-blink error code. Following the troubleshooting flowchart, I ended up replacing the SS board. However, even after replacing it, the issue persists. The TV turns on and stays on without displaying an image, and continuity is confirmed on all connectors. What am I missing here🤔?
Ok Im a mechanical engineer ...but I thought I was able to follow a rather simple flowchart for electric troubleshooting 😂.
