is it a transistor type with 3 legs OR a chip with 8 legs, and a part number would also be helpful ?/

        P/N of this MOSFET? N-channel or P-channel?
With the tab up and legs down.
Left pin is the Gate, middle pin is the Drain, the right pin is the Source.
We can only check for shorted only since MOSFET is a normally open device with an exception if it has protection diode between Source and Drain, or Gate protection diode between Gate and Source.
So for now, just measure the resistance between

Actually, you *CAN* kinda-sorta check a MOSFET, if you have a diode-check range on your multimeter. Might not work in 100% of the cases, but it's useful at least as a "double check".

(In the case of an N-channel MOSFET)

          1) Black probe on the Source leg
          2) Touch the Gate with the red probe (to charge it and "open" the FET), then move it to the Drain pin

You should see a reading of a few mV on the meter, which may slowly, or may not increase within the following few seconds.

          3) Then short the Gate to the Source pin (with a wire or a resistor leg or whatever).

Now put the red probe on the Drain again (black's still on the Source), and you should get an "out of range" reading.

Still in the case of an N-MOSFET, with the red probe on the Source and the black probe on the Drain, you should get a reading of 0,5-0,7V on the diode check setting. If this is the case, the "body diode" is still working as such. If it were shorted, the reading would be a lot closer to [zero].

For P-channel MOSFETs, the same method applies, but the positions for the red and black probes from the multimeter need to be reversed

How To Test a P-channel Trench Mosfet Using A Multimeter In Diode Mode
            by dj8452000
I am new to electronics and I'm understanding most of what I'm reading but I have a mosfet on my board that I've identified as a P-channel Trench Mosfet. I haven't a clue how to test this and what I should expect to see with the multimeter probes. I am hoping someone with years more experience than myself can help me understand how to use a multimeter to read this. Please look at the drawing I have attached to this and can you try to explain to me what I should be doing with my multimeter in diode mode and what results I should expect from a good mosfet?...

How do you test MOSFET in laptops ?
            by Jane
I tried to use this method:

            Testing an N-channel MOSFET:

Step 1: Discharge the Gate (turn off the MOSFET)
Place the black probe (COM) on the Source (S) and the red probe on the Drain (D). The multimeter should show no continuity (high resistance or "OL" – open line).
Then, touch the black probe to the Source (S) and the red probe to the Gate (G). This discharges any stored charge in the Gate, turning the MOSFET off.

Step 2: Charge the Gate (turn on the MOSFET)
Now, place the red probe on the Gate (G) and the black probe on the

How to test Subwoofer Amplifier with only a multimeter
            by jinu_j
            Hi Folks

Need some advice on how to test a subwoofer amplifier if i have access to only a multimeter.

            Problem
I have a Boston Acoustics active Subwoofer (soundware S). Its rated output is 200W. But the output i am getting is very low i can barely hear/feel it even if put the gain at max. I replaced all the capacitors in the Subwoofer amplifier but still no change.

Is there anyway to test this without getting an oscilloscope/Function generator to see if the fault is with amplifier, driver or the source??

            Any advice would be appreciated...

            Test circuit for curiosity : 2 x NE555 (astable + PWM) + n-mosfet + var 10k + pc fan
            by bendeg
            Hi reader,

I'm trying to control a pc fan speed by giving PWM to the gate of a n-mosfet.

            1) generation of a clock with a 555 timer (~ 1,5 kHz, as seen in the datasheet, fig.12) (Vcc = 6V).
Output to TRIG of second timer (pin 2) + red led

            2) generation of a PWM with a second 555 timer (as seen in the datasheet, fig.18), CONT (pin 5) modulated by a variable 10k resistor (Vcc)

            3) Using output of second timer to "pulse" n-mosfet gate (MDP13N50) + yellow led

            4) pc fan (12V, 0.18A) in series in drain-source of...

VGA MOSfet permanently shorted and loss of MOSfet pad
            by Nooy
Hello everyone, I recently found this badcaps site and super Learn Electronics Repair youtube channel. And I wanted to learn how to troubleshoot power supplies and VGA cards and how to practice soldering, since I already have a properly defective piece of them. I am currently trying to solve two problems:

I have a Gigabyte GV-RX460WF2OC-4GD type card. I managed to find the faulty MOSfet (AON6414A) on it, which I replaced. The card starts up, but after about half a minute, the MOSfet in the same position will be shorted again. Is it possible that the PWM controller driving the MOSfet...
