Re: Gateway black screen
Thanks pal, I wish I had your skills but I'm afraid I can't even read your drawing with alone trace it from a photograph. Not much of a tech guy just take out put back?? I am hoping for a walk me through on this otherwise it will end up in the garabage??

Re: Gateway black screen
OK, Please look at post 14, since the the power supply will run the minute you plug it into the outlet, you can power up the board by itself without having any board attached to it, check and see if you do have 12~18V at the test point as shown in post 14 using the ground point as shown. Just be careful not to touch anything in the primary side such as the traces or the heat sink.Leave a comment:

Re: Gateway black screen
Thanks budm you are right on my ground point. I did not know that. The reading using the negative leg (the grey side) of the large cap is zero both ends of the resistor. With one leg on the positive side of the large cap I am reading 165 volts on both ends of the resistor?Last edited by davg; 09-12-2012, 04:32 PM.Leave a comment:

Re: Gateway black screen
I believe you are reading 56V is because you are using the chassis ground as a ground point. When you work on the Primary (HOT SIDE) you have to use the negative leg of the LARGE DC filter cap in the PRIMARY side as the circuit ground point.Leave a comment:

Re: Gateway black screen
OK, first check the black rectangular fuse which is for the main board, if it checks OK, then you can do one of two things:
1) Disconnect the two ends of the jumper wires which feed the B+ to the Inverter circuits and see if the voltage becomes steady and the power LED will now come on. If it does not, then see step 2. If it does, then you may have shorted MOSFETS.
2) Try new start-up cap to see if the the voltage will be steady.
I will you how to check and see if the MOSFET's are shorted out or not later.

Re: Gateway black screen
Possible problems with a fluctuating voltage on the startup cap.
1) the startup cap is bad
2) the SMPS IC is bad
3) something is shorted on the output side like a diode
Checking for shorted diodes is the easiest followed up changing the startup cap.Leave a comment:

Hello,
YouTube video of the problem encountered: https://youtube.com/shorts/q7TLNv36LUo
I am a pro and I have a problem that I have never seen despite my 7.5 years of experience on my own and my thousands of repairs, on a customer's Dell G3 15 3500.
On this PC I have already changed the complete palmrest because the keyboard was no longer working properly.
I also changed the screen because the PC fell and the screen was broken.
I changed the battery with a new and original battery.
I also had corrosion/oxidation on the... -
by VcemPzdHello everyone !
My name is Chris, I am a 30 years old embedded software developer working in the automotive industry. I am really passionate about learning new skills and repairing/crafting stuff. I came around this forum last week with the goal of repairing my faulty gaming laptop, indeed, I was video editing on it when suddenly a black screen popped and never disappearedI bought some stuff to try to repair it and learn as many things as possible about computer repairs but nothing worked so far. When the black screen appeared, my legion 5 pro was connected to my external monitor...

by DaniKHi everyone,
I have this strange behaviour with Acer Aspire E5-574-52RH, i5 6200U, intel graphics, DA0ZRWMB6G0 Rev G, model ZRW.
Laptop came in for a SSD upgrade, took everything apart to install the SSD.
Everything started after modifying BIOS settings to boot UEFI instead of Legacy.
Laptop works fine, i installed windows 10 and drivers/updates, everything works ok(when it works)
The black screen problem is random, maybe 5 out 10 times, laptop remains with the black screen, no image
Symptoms are:
- random black screen after displaying Acer logo... -
by turmixHello, I'm working on a new deskmod pc project and have a problem with my monitor, an AOC U34G3XM, well, I may have bricked it.
The monitor was dismanteled and the separate parts parts integrated in the desk. the screen panel alone is on the upper part, and main board/video board + power board on the back of the desk (not enough place on the cover to fit it)
At first everything was working smoothly, then I decided to change the connexion between the video board and the screen for a longer one. Still working fine
During another reassembly, I made a mistake, and...-

by m1ch43lzmHi, this is my personal laptop, which the original board (lets call it Board A) blew up PU8700 (TPS51486), making a hole on the board, i had left the laptop at my desk one day with the battery fully charged and didn't touch it for a week, but when i tried to turn it on it didn't
Thought the battery was dead, so i plugged in the charger then tried to power on, the power LED blinked once, charged LED still orange, unplugged the charger, plugged in again and I noticed the "magic smoke" smell, so i unplugged the charger, removed the back cover and saw the blown IC (the "magic... - Loading...
