    Samsung Syncmaster 713n problem

Hi, I have a Syncmaster 713N I got for free, and well, it actually kind-of works. Whjen I have no cable plugged in, it will go all "Check input cable" or something like that. But when I put in the cable (with working output, checked on 3 other monitors) it doesn't do anything except have a black screen.

    Any ideas?

    Cheers,
    Oerg

It's not an unusual problem with Samsungs. I'm not aware of anyone who has successfully repaired a monitor with the problem.

One point that I have not checked - have you tried the monitor on a computer whose video card has been set to 640 x 480 resolution? Or connecting the monitor to a computer while both are unplugged, plugging in both, then turning on the monitor, then turning on the computer?

        Firmware/flash rom corruption.
There are 10 kind of people in this world: those that understand binary, and those who don't.
        • ASUS ROG Maximus IX Code
        • Intel Core i5-7600K 3.8GHz
        • 16gb GSKILL TridentZ RGB DDR4-3200
        • 1 M2 SSD + 2 WD Blue 1TB (Mirrored)
        • Windows 10 Pro x64
        • GeForce GT1050
          2 x Acer KA240H + 1 Vewsonic VP2130 21 (a cap replacement job )

It depends on the cause. If it's the flash memory (used to store user settings), sometimes a master reset will solve it. This involves holding down certain buttons while plugging in the monitor. If it's the firmware, it would require obtaining a good copy of the firmware, a blank prom, copying the firmware to the new prom, then installing the new prom on the board. The firmware may be difficult (or impossible) to find, the programmer will easily run $100, and replacing the IC is challenging.

One possible alternative: I have seen ICs for sale with the firmware preloaded. The prices on these were reasonable - under $10, but they are not available for many monitors.
