Sony Str-DB940 problem with rear speakers

    Hi all,

New at this forum, came across searching on db940 troubles.
I have troubles with my Sony STR-DB940 amplifier and am not willing to throw it away; it really has perfect sound and power.
The problem occurs with the rear surround speakers: they don't work .
Well, sometimes they do. While testing with the builtin testtone I had no sound on both rear speakers. Now, while the amp is transmitting the sound to the rear speakers and I turn the volume to >80% it pops in. Like I scared him.. I have to do this with both L and R rears and they would work for some time (minutes). Then they stop producing sound again. It's annoying, can't find and don't know where to look for and how to solve this.
Can anyone be of any help? I'd appreciate it a lot!

    Thks, Marcel

I would guess that it's a bad relay contact, or dirty switch.
Other possibility would be a bad solder joint.

If they come in clear at higher volume I would resolder the outputs. I always scope the signal going into the amp curcuit. Try to find the outputs that control those speakers.
check/resolder relays as said above. check resolder outputs for said speakers. Good luck

        Hello vegadesigns!!

... I had exactly the same problems with my str db-940.....!!
...I´ve tried several things, including increasing the audio output to the rear speakers!!... this makes the overall time interval between the "audio blackouts" alot longer.... BUT I think I´ve just solved the problem with yet anoher solution... First try to play the loud sound, so that the rear speakers plays again... than change the "impedance" on the backside of the receiver to 8 ohm...... That worked for me!!!... so far... that is.... !!

If I could get your email, we could keep in touch if the problem continues!!
