    C-Media CMI8738 audio card whining

I have this audio card in ASUS TUSL2-C and I hear the speaker whining even if sound is muted.

My first sucpect is PCI slot - I have the card in the last PCI on the bottom of case.

The second suspect is that I overshooted PCI caps capacitance. IIRC there were 1000 uF caps and I changed them for Samxon GC 3300 uF ones (did not have lower capacitance ).

However there should be no drasticall current flow between CPU and PCI as I changed all the crappy caps with low capacitance in VRM for the GC Samxon's. I also added the caps which were not ocuppied so the capacitance aroud PCI slots should've risen equaly to VRM capacitance.

You guys are far more educated in this area than I am, so any idea where the problem could be?

Re: C-Media CMI8738 audio card whining

OK, calm down men...so I realized swapping cards is still faster than changing caps again even if it drives me crazy. Now network card is in no. 4 and audio card in no. 5, both running fine. Thanks god.

But anyway I though PCI related problems (IRQ stuff, only one card works or no card works etc.) are more VIA's domain. Guess I've been wrong. No matter if you have VIA, NVIDIA or Intel chipset, it's still the same shit full of swappign cards and moving with them in slot using brute force. I should partially blame people around the world also...their interest in shining stuff makes gold prices to rise all the time...we NEED more gold in electronics! F****ing contacts make much problems too.

It concerns me what would happen if I used all the six slots...the computer will burn in fire I guess...?

Anyway, if somebody would have similar problem, try playing with card position first

those cheapo cards caused nothing but trouble for me with their next to nonexistant filtering.

the few caps that are on it sometimes don't even have a manufacturer on them..

i switched over to Creative Soundblaster 128PCI for cheap PCI cards with no fancy crap noone needs.. never had a problem with those..

Yeah I tried some card with SB128 chip but the system crashed soon after starting up That's for the PCI problems I've been talking about...

I wouldn't change 1000uF for 3300uF or add capacitors in empty positions unless you know it's OK to do so

I have two CMI-8738 based cards though, and I have had IRQ issues with both.

If I remember right, when they share IRQ with LAN card, they have major issues with audio skipping etc when the LAN card is in high use. Maybe yours was having an issue with some other card.

Anyway, your problem was most likely the card and not the board, actually...

Marian Trace Alpha sound card repair help
            by Christos Tsiligiannis
            Hello to the forum.

My name is Christos, I am new to the forum here and i am posting from Greece.

So i have this old German sound card from Marian, called Trace Alpha. To be exact i have 2 of them and i use them professionally for my small FM radio station here. The first one works like a charm, but the second one does not work at all.

To be more specific in the same exact pc with windows 7 (i even tried 32bit) the one works while the other doesn't.

So i tried asking for a schematic from the company and they would not give me one. Instead they...

            Graphics Card mounting frame
            by Kemer
Hello, I removed the graphics card from my laptop and I want to heat it in the oven. What I want to ask is, is it okay to heat the card without removing the metal mounting frame on it?

As you can see in the photo, there is a plastic (black) gasket between the metal frame and the card. It sticks the frame tightly to the card.

I previously removed the metal frame while heating it, but it is quite difficult to separate it from the surface it is attached to. If there is no problem, I do not want to remove it.

What worries me right now is the possibility that...

EVGA Nu Audio Sound Card - Not Working
            by FZG
I have an EVGA Nu Audio sound card that is not working properly and I need some help diagnosing the fault (preferably by someone who owns this card and is willing to take some measurements).

The card sort of powers up (LED lights are coming on and the relais is clicking, some voltages are present) but it is not detected in Windows. I tried installing in two different PCs and tried several driver versions but the card was never detected anyway. So I thought this is probably not a driver / software-issue and then disassembled the card to take some measurements.

            I found...

Gigabyte Aorus 1080ti - card not initialising
            by benwaterson
            Hi there.

Have searched various forums but haven't come across the exact issue I am having.

Bought the 1080ti with a fault (randomly shutting down, black screen , fans full speed etc). Previous owner had replaced thermal pads but many were too thick on inspection.

I tested the card in windows, all loaded up ok. Put some load on the card and it crashed. GPU was reporting 92 degrees C at the time.

Switched the stock cooler out for an AIO water cooler from my 1080 FE, booted the card back up - temps were much better and allowed some load to be applied...
