I recently discovered that my hi-fi has a Pro Logic decoder built-in. Today I tried rigging up an extra pair of speakers behind me, and connecting them to the Left and Right surround jacks on the hi-fi in addition to the normal front speakers.
I found that the surround output jacks are only enabled with the source set to AUX (2-channel stereo). I also found that I didn't get any sound out if only one of the jacks was connected - only if both are connected to speakers. I'm using my Nintendo Wii as a source, on which many games do support Pro Logic 2.
Thing is, I'm not that impressed with the result. It's as if some of the stereo effects are coming out of the rear speakers instead of the front, a bit like 'wide stereo'. In fact, it sounds rather like the rear speakers are doing a 'vocal cancel' of the main stereo signal!
There's also a Q-Surround button on the hi-fi, but that just seems to make the rear speakers slightly louder and causes a strange antiphase effect on the front channels.
Have I set up the hi-fi or connections wrong? Are the speakers in the wrong place? Is the Wii outputting a signal that the decoder can't handle?
